You need to know the microfarad rating. See the little uf? That is the rating. Make sure you get one that matches the one you have. You may have to do some googling but I am sure amazon or eBay will be much cheaper than Sears.
Make sure you match up the numbers, very important. I have never seen one that bad, it looks like it has burst?
I have had some experience looking for replacements for my AC units both inside and outside as well as some other applications.
It should be relatively cheap and I would start with Graingers if you have one close, maybe try an AC supplier/parts house that will sell to the general public. Maybe Solar Supply if you have one nearby?
Capacitors are considered active electronic components. They do wear out and the paper they are made out of gets weaker. I've seen worst than that. Try replacing it first if it pop's again then try to determine how many ohms on on the primary and secondary windings of the motor it's powering.
If you cannot read the microfarad rating, you will need to get it from sears. This rating is important for proper motor starting, running, and operating temperature, and current.
I can't see it in the pic, but if you can read it a replacement should be easy to find.
A capacitor is like a big sheet of foil that stores a charge on the surface. That wouldn't fit in a small space, so they put an insulator on the surface and it's rolled up. If the insulator breaks down or a voltage spike arcs thru the insulator, it shorts out. It usually results in a popped container.
And 20mfd (millifarad) and 20 ufd (microfarad) are not the same thing. The 20 mfd has 1000 times more capacitance than the 20 ufd.
