Panhandle Deer Management - 1 Buck Counties

Has anyone had any conversations with TPWD regarding the continued 1 buck limits in many of the panhandle counties? We are finding this difficult to get a handle on our herd with the inability many feel to take a management/cull buck until later in the season after the rut and breeding times have past. We have seen our cull population increase at rates that are a little alarming with little ability to control it unless many hunters give up the opportunity to take a trophy buck that is out there.

Any thoughts? We try and really manage the herd and are very responsible. We take our allotted does each year to control the doe population but the crap claws and ugly dudes keep surviving.

I guess I need to quit whining and just give up my buck tag for a few years and take care of the herd.

    Thoughts?

We have some of the same problem at our place. I guess you could invite guest to kill your cull deer.

The Managed Lands Deer Program (MLDP) is intended to foster and support sound management and stewardship of native wildlife and wildlife habitats on private lands in Texas.

Talk to a biologist about getting into the MLD program. Not real hard to do at all, and helps with your problem of limited herd harvest/management...

This if your lease rules allow it. We are lucky, our lease is in 2 counties so 1 cull, 1 trophy.

Sounds like you need to work towards MLD II or III. Then tags are based off the property and herd numbers. Not hunter numbers

We've run into the same issue. Have no issue managing our does with the allotted 4 each, but this season we've noticed a proliferation of ***** bucks in the herd. Typically we'll let a guest take a cull or use our tag on one as the season comes to an end
