I started taking allopurinol daily and haven't had a gout attack in years. But I keep a bottle of Indomethacin handy just in case. That knocks it out quickly. It seems that wild game (particularly pork), alcohol, and shrimp were my trigger foods. Since I love all three, I was really screwed. But definitely go to the dr. if it's a regular occurrence and look into the meds I posted above.

This /\/\ I tried to just watch what i ate or drank for years, tired of getting that crap so I got the meds, Allipurinol and Colchesin, that crap will ruin your joints for life if you do not do something.

Beer and raw/dehydrated foods (jerky) are my triggers. I would get it once or twice a year and just deal with it but this year it was a lot worse. Got to the dr and get allopurinol. That is supposed to be the best medicine to prevent it.

Fish and processed meat set mine off.

One dose of probenecid with colchicine and I'm back to dancing in about two hours.

Shrimp, whiskey, and just luck of the draw triggers mine. I was using indomethicin but that stuff is hard on your organs. I get it in my feet, left knee, left hip shoulders and just recently I had a flare in my lower back. I just started Allopurinol so we'll see how it goes.

My advice is try to identify what foods trigger for you. My experience is every person has certain things that seem to do it. They are all foods rich in purines, but I handle red meat and beer just fine. Some people are the opposite. When you have a flare, try to stay away from whatever food you had that was high purine. And good luck.

Black cheery juice, black cherry extract pill, help a lot. A friend says apple cider vinegar helps him. You have to find what sets yours off. For me shellfish do it.

Same here, take Allopurinol daily and no issues. I thought one time when I ran out that I would just see how things go and sure enough a month or two later, BAM. For the folks that have gout and have an outbreak, you know that it ain't no joke. That time I got it in both ankles at one time, literally could not walk. As soon as I could, went right back to the Dr. and got my RX renewed and have never missed a day since.

Both my dad and grandpa get/got it at least 3-4 times a year. So i'm guessing that I get to look forward to it some day? I turn 42 in a week and nothing yet so I'm hoping that I'm fortunate to not have to deal with it.

Thanks for the responses. October has been horrible for me. It started with a torn tendon in my left foot. Tendonitis in my right. Then my right knee blowing up. It was already bad from high school football . And, now gout. Fun, huh ..???
