I started taking allopurinol daily and haven't had a gout attack in years. But I keep a bottle of Indomethacin handy just in case. That knocks it out quickly. It seems that wild game (particularly pork), alcohol, and shrimp were my trigger foods. Since I love all three, I was really screwed. But definitely go to the dr. if it's a regular occurrence and look into the meds I posted above.

Shrimp, whiskey, and just luck of the draw triggers mine. I was using indomethicin but that stuff is hard on your organs. I get it in my feet, left knee, left hip shoulders and just recently I had a flare in my lower back. I just started Allopurinol so we'll see how it goes.
My advice is try to identify what foods trigger for you. My experience is every person has certain things that seem to do it. They are all foods rich in purines, but I handle red meat and beer just fine. Some people are the opposite. When you have a flare, try to stay away from whatever food you had that was high purine. And good luck.
