    Bad Weekend?

I have had little chance to set up and hunt this year; changed jobs, medical bills, travel for work, and paying for a spring wedding. But last weekend I was able to get up to Oklahoma and the rancher still had cattle of the 160 acres and the farmer next door had not planted the wheat feed (aka the all you can eat buffet -- that pulls deer thru said 160 acres). The rancher said he would move cattle Monday or Tuesday and I threw a blind and a feeder --- Thursday rancher calls and has not had time to move cows, not what I wanted to hear. They not only eat the corn (yes, no feeder pen) but are genetically breed to as blood hounds, because they can track me down no matter where I sit.

SO FAST FORWARD TO THIS WEEKEND AND MY LOW EXPECTATIONS.

Get there Friday early afternoon and cattle had torn the feeder to crap and it is HOT. I had planned to hunt and come home Saturday night and spend time with the wife and son - so only 3 sits ahead of me. I grab the two cards from the trail cameras and throw out some hand corn. I find some shade and start going thru the pics, over 1900 pics and only 6 of deer. Cows, quail, doves, road runners, skunks, cows, coyotes, and cows. LIKE I SAID BAD WEEKEND.

However, I did see deer every sit. Friday a doe skirted me early then about 30 minutes before dark, a nice 8 that has decent mass, just needs some age and a bigger-bodied 5pt that probably needs to go. Saturday morning, young 4pt and a doe and yearling after 2 coyotes buzzed me early and quickly. And a frightful encounter with the skunk about 5 yards from the blind. Saturday afternoon, about 45 minutes left and her comes the cows. I had seen a doe already but 70/80 yards out. The cattle took up shop on my hand corn. I made the decision to jump out of the blind and slip to the edge of the cover about 80 yards away. I ended up seeing a doe and fawn at 40 yards, then started slowly walking out and came up on a doe and twin fawns about 50 yards behind my setup.

Also, Saturday the farmer was seeding for the wheat.

And got the feeder home, put on a battery and it fired right up --- need to work on some legs and get it back up there.

OK, SO MAYBE NOT SUCH A BAD WEEKEND.

Rancher charges me $500 to hunt the 160 acres and told me I could hunt another 80 acre and 160 acre track he had -- no extra charges.

Here are the few pics I got:

I understand your frustration, but I'd call that a good weekend.

I hope so. I felt pretty good after seeing the pics and the deer during the sits.

Nice buck in the pics, but what concerns me is the fact that you say the cows eat the corn. We have cows on our place and we have never had any problems with the cows eating corn and we have no pens as of now. I did when we feed protein, but most of them are not fully up right now. Cows will come thru the feeder area, but will not eat the corn.

So let me summarize. Not at work. IN the woods. Chance to hunt deer in not so perfect situation/conditions. Not at work. A few cows, wheat not in, feeder a mess, deer on cameras and saw deer on each sit. Not at work. Land owner offered two other places to hunt, Good buck on camera. Not at work. I cant find the bad in this equation, I can find a few obstacles, but the means to an end are still there. Not at work in the woods. Good luck and good hunting.

Cows love corn. They clean out the area around my feeder every chance they get.

Been hunting for many years around a spin feeder and have never had cows stop and eat corn off the ground from a spin feeder.

I had a feeder that didn't have a varmint cage and watched an F1 stop under it and lick my spinner to get corn out twice in one morning

Maybe the owners of our property feed them enough during the week (feed every week) and with the limited number of cows on this place and feed waist deep, the cows here are maybe just not interested in corn. I may jink myself, but we fortunately have not had cows hang around a feeder and either eating corn off the ground or bumping the feeder or feeder legs to get corn off the spinner plate. I guess we are lucky.

That's a good looking buck. Seeing deer every time hunting, only $500 for a total of 400acres....that price is worth dealing with the cows. I'm kinda in the same boat, good land owner great price for 350 acres but have to deal with cows.

Your story has nothing on my bow season... but this isnt a peeing contest lol i know your feelings all too well. Now ill hunt rifle season with a bow. Chances of me bagging a deer now went slim to none but i got faith
