Thieves - Busted but not caught, yet

Had an interesting morning today. Customer calls before 9am asking if we picked up his rented Bobcat E35 from the jobsite last night. We didn't so it was stolen during the night. I log on to my laptop and luckily it was equipped with GPS, hit F3 and it pops up about 16 miles from Orange, over north of Vinton, La, very close to Delta Downs racetrack. I get the coordinates and call my OPD buddy but he's hunting, go my next buddy and he's dealing with an intoxicated gent(kinda early, lol) and another officer calls me right back. I give him the serial #, send the coordinates, even a picture of the location behind the guy's house where it's hidden in the woods.

About 45 minutes later I get a call from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's office and they've got 3 deputies standing next to it. I dispatched a hauler to retrieve it as they waited. All total, it was 3 hours and 37 minutes from the time it was reported missing to the time we got it back.

Customers tend to complain about the GPS technology and the costs associated with the equipment but in this case it saved us and them the hassles of dealing with a $55K theft. The unit was nearly new with only 75 hours.

I wonder what that guy thought when the law showed up snooping around? It was on a big piece of property with access from a side road at the back of his land. I'd guess he's gonna claim ignorance and he knows nothing?

It was pretty satisfying to see the green dot pop up on the screen with it's location and then getting the call from LEO they had it located. I know they don't all go that way,,,,,

Tell us more about this GPS unit. Details? Cost? Where to get? Might be something you could put on a UTV.

Glad you got it back, wish we could go back to hanging thieves. I bet you had a huge sigh of relief when you saw the coordinates light up on the computer.

Didn't we have another tbhr lose a skid steer in the last few weeks? Anyone know if he recovered his?

I know they looked for fingerprints as I felt it was an inside job, just a personal gut feeling, especially where it ended up. Problem is, as explained by my detective buddy, is all the inside guys should have some fingerprints on it. Made sense to me but still makes me mad,,, I get the feeling we are way ahead just getting the machine back, I don't think they will find the culprit,,,

I will find out what we are using now. I work for United Rentals and all of our incoming equipment is equipped with telematics(GPS). It's hidden somewhere that is not easily accessible and pings each time the machine is turned on and off. It helps track usage for customers and in this case, help recover the machine.

Having said that, I had a John Deere Backhoe stolen 3 years ago and it was found about 18 months later. A guy unknowingly bought it and needed a part. It was found via serial # through the John Deere system. It was equipped with Lo Jack but that didn't work at all. It was hidden in the frame on those units. We were told the Lo Jack unit couldn't be found or removed without doing major frame damage to the machine. I think that was just a sales pitch,,,,,,,
