There is a valid reason I'm asking of course. Caught two guys in the dark the other night planning something. The passenger trespassed on my property. It's clearly posted. He had a tiny flashlight and was carefully moving about and making note of things with his light. It sure appeared to me what he and the other were doing was scoping things out ahead of time. I was not armed at that moment and held off on confronting them and just observed. They took off in a hurry. Burglaries in the area are numerous.

I had a couple at my house one time I guess they thought no one was home but I saw some movement via shadow coming through a front window and when I went outside the guy was startled and started going on about selling magazines. I asked him where his clipboard and signup stuff was and he bolted to his buddies hoopty ride parked out front and they took off.

I'm a security consultant and this sure appears to be two individuals conducting pre-event surveillance/reconnaissance. The slightly more sophisticated teams/individuals do this in some manner. It could be a quick drive by to see if anyone's home or be more significant with actual surveillance. It is at this stage that you want the crook to become apprehensive about the target and move on to an easier target. When I go to facilities to conduct security vulnerability assessments (SVA) I have to explain to companies that yes fences and locks, as well as other security measures, are easily defeated they are a deterrent and delaying feature. CCTV cameras are only good at detecting if someone or AI is monitoring but considering the whole multi-layered system a sophisticated adversary will most likely move on unless there is something they want and can only get at the target.

I live out in the country but close to a couple of really trashy nieghborhoods.
Lots of petty crime. Most everyone has problems with folks breaking into their barns and stealing pretty much anything they can haul off.
My dog bites, She is good at it.
Nobody bothers us or our stuff
Why would they not just shoot the dog and steal whatever?
The meanest dog in the world is no match for a .22

First thing the passenger did after getting out was approach my neighbor's mailbox. He used the tiny light to try and find a house number. It was immediately after that, that he proceeded onto my property to examine things. Sure looked like they were studying locations and fixed items for the purpose of returning or forwarding the info. Everything I observed was alarming.
