About the least useable thing is a pulsar hd19a. Runs a less than 2k. Don't get anything less than a 320 core. The new ATN Thor HD series might work too. I think they use the same internals as the Pulsar. I would start with a spotter and use it until you can afford a thermal scope as well. Scanning with a gun mounted thermal just sucks. You'll use your handheld ten fold more than the gun sight.

I have a FLIR RS series and it is pretty freaking awesome BUT they are proud of their products. Typically around $4000-$4500 for the one i currently have. Without a doubt, you get what you pay for with these thermals.

A good 640 unit is still the highest end out there and is still expensive. You'll be hard pressed to find a decent magnified 640 unit for less than 5k. Also, the flir scout line was not very impressive to me. The pulsars were much better.

I have used the FLIR Scout monocular several times and have always been happy with it. I typically only use it for thermal heat scanning but always worked well.

Try doing it from a truck or a side by side. Handheld is way way more convenient. Plus you're not pointing at stuff you might not want to shoot.

Pulsar HD19a is about the least useable thing I would use. The flir scout least model can be had for a little less but it's not even in the same ball park of image quality.

They're certainly useable but most other stuff blows them out of the water on image quality. I've owned a 320 scout, a 640 scout and an LS-XR so I've had a good bit of experience with them.

We do it in a Ranger or back of a truck! Or wait on Coverts to text us pics

I guess what I am saying is I don't make alot of money, so I will continue to scan with the rifle/scope lol

I know some guys that hunt hogs at night for $$. They have access to literally ANY NV or thermal optic they choose.

They use thermal to scan for heat signature and shoot with Gen 3+ NV for that very reason. Even with higher end thermal, target ID was a problem.

I had a Flir RS64 1.1x9 640x480 thermal and sold it a few months ago. That thing would not hold a candle to my new Reap-Ir thermal.
With 12 microns this thing is super clear and I can see for a loooonnnnnnggggg ways and tell what the animal is. I can see farther than I can shoot. I can tell you this, i could spot a hog in the grass with my Reap and would see nothing with the Flir, thats a fact. If I had to keep any scope in my safe I would could my Reap

Talked to the guys at Ultimate Night Vision. They said the Pulsar handheld or the Armasight Zeus 336 30Hz would fit the bill. Sent me some videos from both units and they were light years ahead of what we were looking at this past weekend.

better off with a handheld to spot then shoot with a light once spotted
it is a royal PIA to try to hold a rifle up and scan with it
you spend wayyyyy more time scanning than shooting
If you were placing this on a 8.5" and 10" SBR would you still recommend the handheld?

I have 2 sbrs and scan with them both. No problems on my end
