    LAGUNA ATASCOSA NWR Nilgai

I was drawn to go on a Archery Nilgai hunt at the Luguna Atascosa NWR.
Has anybody made this hunt before? I know absolutely nothing about Nilgai besides what they look like. My hunt will take place Nov 18-Nov 22.
If anyone has any tips or knows anything about Nilgai send it my way!!

Ha, be prepared or the hardest hunt you will ever experience. Only a slim chance of taking one with a bow. Practice out to a hundred yards and get good.
I drew for the archery whitetail hunt down there on 12/6-12/6.
Search here, there are several threads on it.

I am assuming it is only spot and stalk?

They have stands already in place so no one will walk past where you're hunting and they provide transportation to and from your assigned stands.

I'm not sure. But from what I've read, they will spot you first and will high tail it outa there fast.

Ya I read in other threads that I searched up they cleaned up the population quite a bit. I am sure the population is still pretty stable. Well I hope so at least lol

We were told that when we were down there on a cast and blast a couple of weeks ago, although we seen nilgai every morning and evening while headed out to fish.

I bow hunted Nilgai on the King and Kenedy several times - from blinds, stands, water holes, over dung piles, etc - without seeing an animal within a few hundred yards.

Somewhat by accident, I "still hunted" my way back to camp one morning (I had forgotten my release) and came upon multiple animals (all but one were cows), and even managed to stalk within 60 yards of a couple (I didn't have my release, so I couldn't take a shot).

My next (and last) trip, I decided to adopt the still hunt/spot-stalk strategy from the beginning. I saw 4 big bulls the first morning, and successfully pulled off a stalk (across an open pasture) and shot a big, mature bull at 35 yards.

If I'm fortunate to ever hunt them again, I'll take my chances with the spot & stalk approach.

That's nice. That's my approach to hunt them down there. Hopefully I can get an area with little pressure and I can move around.
