I'm headed down to Laguna in Jan for deer and nilgai. What's the best type of bullet? I was going to get some 165gr Core loks, maybe some Barnes vor-tx.
For nilgai bulls you may want to use a nosler partition or something with a little more penetrating ability. Nilgai cows though will drop with a CoreLokt or whatever else. Their hide is thicker, but it isn't anything like a 250lb boar's armor
For Nilgai I would go with nosler partition, swift A Frame, something with more penetration but still controlled expansion. Which ever you choose I would go with 180gr or better, those are some tough beast
Any 165 grain bullet and up, will work fine as long as its not a ballistic tip. I've killed several nilgai years back. And I dropped all of them with 165 grain Speer Grand Slams, that I had reloaded specifically for them. The 150 grain is a little on the light side, IMO. Maybe a Barnes tsx would work ok. I just don't like copper bullets very much. All the GS bullets I used to kill those nilgai passed through the animal. I always had exit wounds. If you want to drop them quick aim for the upper shoulder just below the hump and break the spine. Good luck, and stay safe.
Trust me, you don't need TSX bullets, you can drop them with a cup and core bullet, but if you have them, use them. What is important is going to be, bullet placement. I've hunted Laguna and there's a lot of open area, so you may have a long shot, unless you catch them close in the brushy areas. So again bullet placement is going to be important.
No way I would use a CoreLokt.....for whitetail, sure. I know Nilgai aren't tanks but you've heard plenty of guides talk about their toughness. Nosler Partition, Trophy Bonded Tip (successor to the TB Bear Claw), Barnes TSX, etc is what I'd use, 165-180 grain. You're looking for reliable expansion, deep penetration and bone crushing ability while the bullet holds together and doesn't come apart.
Shots at the Laguna will PROBABLY be a pretty long poke...Id shoot what your rifle shoots well. I used a 165 gr winchester power point in my 06. It shoots them well and I know if I put one threw its shoulders, if it didnt drop DRT.,..Id find it.
Thanks for the responses, doesn't really seem to be a clear cut winner. I'll probly buy a couple and see what shoots the best. To bad nobody sells a 5 pack just to try out.
