    How Generous!

Just got a letter from State Farm that will give me three years of free Onstar service. It's like getting a free lunch! Surely it's out of the goodness of their hearts and not to track my driving habits. Man companies are nice 0% interest on vehicles and now this. Too bad it was instilled in me at an early age that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Yep, they want to track your driving habits. Lots of auto insurance companies are trying to do this. Consumers (good drivers in particular) have strongly indicated that they want to pay a price that is more specifically related to their own driving habits, not a larger and more general group. The only way to do that is to get more specific info.

I do like the idea. Because I do drive responsibly and 4-6 MPH over.

If they raise rates and you leave, can you keep Onstar?

It's like Walmart putting tracking devices in clothing. They did this as well to watermelons donated to a long time food outreach group connected to a church.

I don't know anything about the specifics of state farms program. I was just speaking in general terms. I would bet that sf pays onstar while you are with them and if you left them, they'd probably stop paying for the service. Just a guess though.

My Auto Insurance gave me the "key" devise that plugged in to the computer and tracked/recorded driving data for 30 days. Mine earned me a 20% discount and my son earned a 15% discount. But I don't exceed speed or race my little 4 cylinder.

Only reason they are doing it is to gather data to be used against you if you ever need to file a claim.

I'm having second thoughts. My wife and I have four vehicles. Three have Onstar and my daily driver does not. One of the Onstar equipped vehicles gets driven less than 2500 miles a year. Maybe I should have the one that barely gets driven hooked up.
