Wood duck hunting for 8yr old

My younger son loves to duck hunt, and even though this I told him I'd help him get his first deer this year he said he'd rather duck hunt. He first went with Collin (duckman49) in Anahuac when he was 6. Then last year we went to the coast, and he got his first actual duck in Port OConnor. This year he's 8, and he can handle his pump 20g well enough that I thought maybe we'd try hunting in timber for some wood ducks and mallards.

He has waders, but we've never hunted flooded timber. Do y'all think he'd do ok or does he need another year or two to grow? Just worried about steady footing and depth of water. We'd be going with a guide, preferably just as a group of two.

Whatchyall think? Do-able or stick to the coast and prairie for another few years?

    Little fellows get cold quick

That said I used to take a light weight lock on stand to put my kids on. just above the water line

take him, mine are grown and gone, it happened in the blink of an eye

How tall is he? Place i hunt is flooded timber and you gotta be careful in some places. Holes at the bottom and sudden drops. Im short so i stay very attentive in wading water. Not saying he shouldnt go. But maybe go scope out the place in waders first to see how the terrain is under the water

I as a youngster was put on a lock on, but at the same time some wood duck holes we hunted we could stand on dry ground. Take him, just pay attention to him. I was in a blind at that age all the time. Got a small lake-pond behind me right now that they are talking like crazy on. They are in there eating acorns.

Just jump shoot a few off a creek or pond. No waders or lock on needed. Probably a littler harder that shooting decoying birds but still doable. Gets my heart pumpin more than watching them dive in thru the trees

That's pretty big shoes to fill for a young man. I tip my hat to him. I don't even like going unless it's below freezing! Get him some good waders and stay locked onto him until you get where you are going.

And sometimes works better on wary late season birds [emoji3]
