Finding a new job out of state: where to start?

The wife and I are kicking around moving somewhere else, even if it's only for a couple years, and as usual, the number one thing on the list is a job.

For you guys who have moved from another state, where did you start looking for a job? Did you start with job boards online? Know someone living in that state? Something else?

    Thanks for the help!

I have moved a number of times to several states. Each move was because of a job change. I found the job and made the move.
Contacts help a bunch,. If you know people where you want to go to or know people in the field you want to be doing.
Of course, the Aggie network doesn't hurt me any either,,,
    ;o)

No different than finding a job in state. Figure out your network, and work it. Get on LinkedIn, find companies, find those who work for those companies, and discover links to those people. Phone calls, e-mails, LinkedIn messages, job applications etc. The job search is so much about who you know and how you present yourself. LinkedIn has been a huge help for me during job search and sales. Use it. If you have a degree, use the university. Got the alumni events, happy hours, etc. Meet people, expand your network. So many companies have offices all over the country. It just takes meeting that one person who knows that one person to help you.

      Good luck.

I found a job then moved. Search where you want to live first, then find ways to make in roads in that community. For me, I moved here to work at a transmission line company, worked there for a year. Then I switched to consulting, and love it, and the area.

Once I found the area I wanted to be in, I changed jobs to suit what I liked doing more.

My wife and I wanted to leave the state I WAS working in. We started by really thinking about want city we want to shoot for, tried to make a short list. I looked for jobs in those cities. I actually found a job in my current company that I was able to transfer to in the top city on our list. Narrowing down where is the key first, then looking for whats out there.

This is one of the first things we looked at was the cost of living difference. Some places, it's nearly identical but you go 1/2 hour in any direction and it was totally different.

Thanks for the thoughts and opinions! Keep 'em coming!

When we were thinking about moving up here we first looked at plces we would like to live. Thanks Just throw it for his time showing us around Ft. Collins. Then I started looking for positions on linked in, company websites, and from my contacts. Soon founde out Ft. Collins wouldn't support us and found this one in Colo Springs. Then we started looking at all the other stuff, cost of living, schools, daycare, work for my wife, ect.

Then we decided to do it.

                    Well....that depends who you ask.

My "day job" is managing a law office of about 20 and doing IT Admin/Network Admin stuff.

My "other job" is poultry farming. We raise pasture raised meat chickens and turkeys and sell them to stores and to consumers.
