big target backstop

What would make a good, big, cheap target backstop? Friend wants to build a shooting range and is experimenting with mattreses and layers of tarps. He wants it to be huge to back all the targets.

Outside- round bales or horse stall mats.

Get Flax bales if you can...they hold up way better than straw or hay...if you are going to cover the target, that ten test compressed fiberboard laid flat is great...cut it into 12" strips and crib and stack them...works great and least for a long time.
