I like a heavy hunting arrow. Mine are 510 grains with a 100 grain broadhead (Thunderhead or Magnus 2-blade) and while 'only' flying at 235 fps, do the job on impact. The only downside is my larger pin gap, and I have to estimate yardage a little more, but I use a laser range finder and while I practice out to 50 typically shoot at 20 yards or less, anyway.
Max velocity is when the arrow leaves the string, I agree. If you don't hit bone, there's no excuse not to pass through. I do it with a 54# recurve on pigs and deer at short range.
