Cross Bow Advice Needed ASAP please

So my dad is 72 and has bow hunted all his life. Started having shoulder trouble and has really been struggling with his bow. Was covered up this morning and tried to draw twice but shoulder just gave out. Needless to say he is pretty upset. Talked him into running to town and looking at cross bows (he's a hard head, took everything I had to talk him into it) and the cheapest they had was $800 so he said not no but... Can you please advise on a good crossbow around $300-$400 (if they exist). I don't want him to buy a junker and have a bad experience on top of everything else he is dealing with. We are all supposed to hit the lease next weekend and he's thinking about backing out - can't let that happen.

If anyone has a good one for sale, I'm looking!

    Thanks!

I would say there are plenty of great crossbows in that price range. I would look at a self cocking mechanism b/c his shoulder is bad

Self cocking and $300-400 don't exist new. Maybe used.

Get on ArcheryTalk.com. I bought a nice, used crossbow for my father in law off there.

Get the Wicked Ridge Warrior G3, its roughly 399$....very very easy to cock, even somebody with terrible shoulders will be able to cock it with a rope cocker....

they are made by Ten Point, so the quality is very nice, they are same bullet hole type accuracy out of the box, quality scope, quality arrows, very durable, I had one for 3 seasons and didn't have to change strings nor had any problems....awesome xbow for the money, shoots a 425 grain arrow @ 300 fps......in that price range I would get that bow, for $80 more bucks you can get the Wicked ridge invader that is much faster and a bit more compact and lighter

Here you go, these are all in your price range.
Barnett crossbows have been around a long time and they are not overly expensive.
Do a search on Amazon.com They have them on sale for $249 and up complete packages.
Be sure to buy a cocking device, which makes it a whole lot easier.

In that price-range, for "new" packages (some a bit more because of tax - referencing Cabelas offerings), you're looking at (in the order I'd choose them):

                        1) Wicked Ridge Ranger
                        2) PSE Fang 350
                        3) Bear Fortus
                        4) Barnett Wildcat, Raptor, Jackal, or Recruit
                        5) Carbon Express X-Force Advantage
                        6) Parker Challenger II and Bushwacker
                        7) Various other Arrow Precision, CenterPoint, SA Sports, Southern Crossbow, Velocity, etc... crossbows

None of the above come with an easy crank-up cocking aid. They just use the standard aids.
Quality (safe) crank-up cocking aids can run you from $160-$240 new, just by themselves, and are usually brand-specific. If it were my dad, I'd see if he could pull back the standard cocking devices - they work like a pulley system, and make cocking it much easier - especially the ones with rollers in the string clips (like the Excalibur one). If he can't, I'd walk with him to the stand, have him climb up, cock it for him and have him haul it up, and then let him hunt.

I know you want one "now", but for my money in a crossbow, I'd buy an Excalibur above all others. Unfortunately, for their lowest priced Excalibur Matrix Grizzly package, you're probably going to spend upwards of $600. However, the price difference is justified in my opinion. Much higher quality for your money. And when your string stretches after practicing with it / breaking it in, you won't have to bring it to an archery shop to adjust it. It's a recurve limb design, so no wheels to deal with. I got the stringer with my Excalibur and can adjust (or change) my string easily, in the field, in less than 5 minutes.

Don't forget - although some people consider them more like a rifle than a bow, you aren't just going to pick one up from the store and hunt 5 minutes later. You are going to have to break in the string, sight in the scope, ensure your broadheads are hitting where your field points were - or have to readjust again, etc...

Regardless what you buy, I'd highly recommend the Slick Trick Xbow Trick broadheads.

                        All the best,
                        Glenn

If you were closer to me I would let him borrow mine. It is an Excalibur and ready to go. I am not using it since I decided to use a bow for the first time in 13-14 yrs.

Any decent crossbow will do the job of killing even if it's an old one, they're just slower and louder my dad bought a Barnett back in the 90s after having a stroke. Old enough it came with pins on the front you adjust like a normal compound bow.
It now has a scope and does the job just fine I shot a javelina with it at the chap 2 years ago and it's my backup for bow hunting if anything ever goes wrong with my bow.
I'll try to see what model it is when I get home but with all the new technology I bet if you found one on eBay it would be $100 or so.
With your dad's age and bring a bow hunter he's hunted with slower back in the day
