D-loops should only be made with D-loop material; any other cordage is suspect, especially paracord.

I use the BCY #23 or #24, both are very good. You can get a 100' spool for about $50 at Lancaster that will last you a very long time.

There is also a product I have seen at Academy and places like that made by Allen. It is individual pieces for D-loops and I think three come in a package. This would be better to keep around in case of emergencies but it is pretty much crap and I wouldn't trust it for long; but it would be good to finish a hunt or something like that.

Oh man.....this brings back bad memories. I'll never forget that awkward feeling (after the cobwebs cleared) when I realized the D-loop gave way. Loosened my two front teeth and I could barely touch my nose for several days. Funny to look back on now, but I don't pull out my bow without checking that D-loop!

Mine broke just 2 weeks ago. No fray before it broke. It broke on the draw about half way back. Found the arrow 50 yards behind my target. 5 minute fix and back to practicing.

                  This^^^.

I buy it by the spool and cut 3 pieces to the length I like. I also use Mike Braden's D Loop Wedge from Lancaster Archery.

It helps keep the D Loop length consistent.
