    Hog dog question?

In your opinion, what is the best hog dog? What blood line?

We always used Black Mouth Cur, but I've seen good dogs that were a mix of various breeds

I always like a cross. Plott x bmc. But a pure breed. Yes Blackmouth cur.

There is no best breed......BMC's are good but some of the best I have seen are mixes.

Catch dog or Strike dog? BMCs, Catahoula, Lacy's, Hound crosses for strike dogs. Amer Bulldogs, Pitbulls, Ridgebacks for catch dogs. I've even seen a Great Dane as a catch dog. Just depends on how well you train them I guess.

We have ran nothing but bmc for 20 years. Started off with some catahoula dogs and ended up with the bmc. Have tried several different plott hounds and such but culled them out and still have the bmc dogs. That's what works best for us and our areas where we hunt. The have a ton of bottom and will flat out leave the country to find a hog. American bulldogs is our catch dogs. Scott bloodlines not Johnson on the bulldog.

It is all about the individual dog but I prefer catahoulas or bmc. The nice thing about them in comparison to hounds is that they do not bark on the trail. That is very important if you hunt areas where the hogs know what a dog is.

I don't worry too much about the breed specific. I just try to get pups out of dogs I know are proven day in and day out. Genetic background is what is important to me. Just because you have a good looking black mouth cur doesn't mean he is a hog dog big difference.

Best hog dogs are the ones that stop chasing at your fence line.
