    Finally got drawn.

My dad and I got drawn for the rifle deer hunt at Laguna Atascosa Jan 6-8. My dad is pretty excited. Couple of questions for that area. Where is the best place to stay? I found a hotel in Laguna Vista that looks to be the closest to the entrance. He shoots a .243, is that enough for a nilgai? Maybe neck or head shot? Thanks for any help

A friend took a nilgai with a .223, just gotta thread that needle right.

.243 is definitely big enough if he can put a good shot on it.

I would look up some anatomy pics of a Nalgai. They are a lot different than a whitetail.

Good luck to both of you.

I would only recommend a neck shot or head shot with that round.

I was thinking a heavier grain and he should be good.

I stayed here a couple of years ago. Nothing fancy, but they have a stove and fridge in the rooms. Very inexpensive.

I would want some quiet a bit bigger for nilgai., They are big tough critters and shots at the LA may be long. I use my 300 win mag. I would think a 3006 at the minimum.

I thought they had caliber requirements in the application specs for these hunts. May want to check and see

The skin on the neck of a big bull is thick, not like 1/2", more like an inch I would say. No way I would shoot a nilgai anywhere but in the ear or throat patch with a .243. There have been plenty of threads on here about which calibers will work, they all will if placed just right. I would say bring the biggest caliber he can accurately shoot. I have killed 2, both with a 300 win mag. Dumped both of them were they stood, one shot at base of the neck and the other a frontal shot to the chest.

Seems pretty silly to risk shooting a Nilgai with a 223
