    Quick Question

I have had 2 encounters the last 2 sits with my target buck. He only comes in on a South or east wind. Never has been on cam with a North wind. First encounter was last Friday when he sensed something wrong somewhat down wind and turned away leaving. Yesterday evening I had the bachelor group working there way in and went straight to the feeder. They looked back and sure enough target buck was working his way around sneaking up downwind on a trail behind me. Watched him for 5 minutes and his senses turned him away again jumping out of there. He never blew or anything. So here is my question. My setups are 20-25 yds from the feeder. The buck has trails 30-40 yds from feeder that skirt the outside edge North and West. I personally want to move a portable tripod West of the East wind Trail that he came in on yesterday. My FIL says he is against it as making changes will bust him and all others out of there. I totally disagree with him and believe unless we make a move and change our setup this buck will outsmart and wind us every time.

    Make the move or not?

6 acre thicket and feeder is in the middle. I have 50 yds from Trail to outside of thicket to work with. Pick a tree 20-25 yds from Trail and leave it alone. Friday we have southeast wind.

I believe if he makes the same move he will be upwind of me the whole time and as he circles the feeder downwind I can smoke him. Taking a gamble not hunting over the corn but mature deer aren't stupid. Really leaning towards this trail.

I'd make the move, I'd use a hangon if I could and trim as little as possible. I'd do it midday and fill the feeder at the same time (your excuse for being in the area)

I would move. Sounds like not much of a chance of getting him with your present set up.

No tree suitable for a hang on. Overgrowth brush and really small oaks that are roughly 10'-12' tall. Tripod is a small 6'.

Red "X" is a thick oak coming in roughly 12' tall. Possibly stuck it there if I can brush it in well. The 2 teal blue circles are where encounters have been. Orange lines are trails. Rarely do they take the outside lines but a few doe do.

6 acres total you are hunting on or 6 acres where the stand is.

We have 100 acres but this is the only brush we have. Sweet little honey hole where the deer love to bed in the corner. Sweetest 6 acres I've hunted!

Make the move. A nice 8 would come in and skirt around the feeder when my brother was in the blind, but would be on camera if no one was there. My brother and I moved in a small tripod on a trail leading to the feeder and he smoked the buck at 18 yds. The buck was focused on the pop up blind and he never knew where my brother was. One of the best feelings we have had hunting was making the move and it paying off.

Congrats! Yeah I feel like it's the best move. Just get in, set it up and get out. Next South, Southeast or East wind hunt it.

Hunt from the ground at the place you're thinking?

Overgrowth too tall. I need a little elevation to have a clear shot at vitals.

Oh I will! If I make the move it will be in the next hour. Grabbing cards and deciding.

Why do you think he won't ever come in on a North wind? Are you saying that he won't when you're in the stand? Or that he never has shown up on cam even with a N wind?

I think you can make a move and be alright if your easy on the area. What about that clump of trees directly north of the feeder? This would be good if he's coming in on the NE trail, and still wont come in on a N wind which means you'd be sitting there on anything other than a NW to SSW.

If you're gonna make a change, I'd suggest doing it while its raining mid-day tomorrow or mid-day friday. It'll kill you scent, help cover the noise you'll make, and the bigger bucks will likely be bedded down depending on how hard the rain is.

Never been on camera ever on a North wind. I'm not sure why. He seems to always be here on the first South wind after a front has come and gone. Thursdays chance of rain is very weak here. I doubt it spits on us. They bed in the trees on the north side of the feeder. They also enter from the West so with an East or south wind I'm busted. The further west I get the better chance I have. There isn't a Northeast Trail that they take to my feeder. They skirt the back coming off neighboring property working there way East and West. Once they hit the main Trail they head south to my setup. All other deer stay on main Trail straight to the feeder. He always splits off behind and comes in on the other side (south side) of my tree after he circles it.
