    Question for the tile/Sheetrock installers

    If you remove tile from Sheetrock and damage the Sheetrock, is it ok to fill in the gaps with thinset or would you need to repair the Sheetrock first? This is on a brand new house where the wrong tile was installed. Here is a picture of the worst chunk of Sheetrock that came out with tile.

    Replace the sheet rock to insure a smooth level tile set.

      Agree with replacing it. Where is this going? If tile on a wall it sounds like a wet area. If so, it should be green board minimum.

        Consider hardie backer or cement board if a shower or tub surround. Red guard also.

          Replace it Ed, no sense in having problems down the road.

            This is on the backsplash from the countertop to the cabinets. They installed the wrong tile in the kitchen. They also had an issue on the shower but it is kerdi board and wasn't damaged when they removed the two incorrect tiles.

            I'm concerned about bonding strength of thunder to the rock as well as moisture directly on the rock. If they had repaired the Sheetrock before retiring I wouldn't have been as concerned but at the least they should have repaired the piece that was missing a chunk.

                Just saw the autocorrects. Thunder = thinset.
                Retiring = retiling

                  Im in the process of doing the same thing at my house. I elected to trim all the rock back to workable joints. My house is 14 years old and the rock behind the backsplash was really brittle. Didnt take long to clean it up. Gives me a chance to run my low voltage under cabinet lighting now too.

                  Rock is cheap and easy to install......dont cut corners.....no pun intended

                    Hydroban by laticrete works like a champ as well.
