You tightened the bolts holding the starter in place........???

I have that exact same JD tractor. Was having similar issues. Mine is a 2013. Neighbor has one too. His was so bad he researched it and found there was a starter issue / factory defect. I called my dealer (personal friend, however) and he sent up a guy with a new starter and replaced mine. Good ever since.

You may want to research JD or tractor blogs, or if you trust your dealer see if he will fess up.

Have someone else try starting it until it quits, then have them hold the key in the start position. Use a volt meter set on 12 v. D.C. and put one probe on each side of every connection you suspect, ie: one probe on the battery post and one on the terminal, then go to the other end of the cable, the frame, etc. If you get a reading of more than a couple of tenths, there's a problem. Also, feel around for the connections to be warm or hot. If you find no bad connections, hold the key in the start position when it quits and tap lightly on the solenoid. If that doesn't work try tapping a bit harder on the starter body. If either makes it start, replace or rebuild it.

Then tap the starter with a hammer to see if it kicks off.

This was the culprit. I disconnected the battery leads and the bolts that hold the starter in place were loose by about 1 1/2 turns. tightened them down and she starts like a champ.

Thanks to all that commented with suggestions. Another reason I love the Green Screen.
