    The meaning of the hunt

Hunting season is finally here for most of us.  For western hunters, they have been hunting since August, and bow hunters here in Texas started last weekend. For the unfortunate rifle hunter…

Wrote an article on how the meaning of the hunt as seemed to have changed because of social media. If you have a few minutes, give it a read and let me know what you think!

Well written. Personally even when I get a few squirrels I see them as trophies. Hunting is about the total experience of the outdoors not just how many inches a spread is. Good luck this season.

Jason, really liked the article and you are spot on. I just got back from my first archery elk hunt in northern Colorado. One of the things I was looking forward to was watching the sunrise and sunset in the mountains. I got to soak all that up and it fulfilled me even though I did not kill an Elk! Good luck to you this season as well.

          Very good

Theres a lot of that " i would not have taken that one" or " why did you shoot that one instead of a doe" right here on TBH. But admittedly it seems this year is not quite as bad as years past. I go to have a good time and i always praise others animals regardless of size or age because i want everyone who hunts to be proud of what they killed. I dont think social media is responsible though, i think its " antler management " or herd management as most people like to call it. But its really all about the antler as i see it.
Over the past 15 years everyone has become an expert on deer herds. And during this time frame the attitudes about age, size have become a barrier to the natural joy that once was the most previlant emotion involved with the hunt. Most folks these days desperately anticipate the moment they get to go hunt but once in the stand thoughts of should or should i not kill this animal, is it really old enough, is it really big enough, can i justify the kill around the literal or hypothetical camp fire. One day, i hope the the pendulum will swing back to the most important emotion.....joy

            Great article.

That is why I dont do social media (FB, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.).

Funny thing is I talked to a coworker last week who went pheasant hunging with his friend in DFW for a high dollar hunt.

He got there and everything was catered.

The hunting is done in 10 stations with 2 hunters to a station and their own tracking dog.

The thing is these pheasants are in a hole 20' below and the guy has a truck full of pheasants and honk to alert the so called hunters the pheasants are about to be released.

The have all killed bagged but get the previous weeks hunts frozen bagged pheasants.

A little off topic but that is not hunting IMO. Makes me sick

Good read! Social media has an impact on a lot of things and hunting is one of them.

A few social media posts about a certain block of woods or river bottom up here holding ducks can be horrible. OOSers swarm based on social media recon. If you post a picture of 50 mallards on a log, you can bet the black face paint, mud motor, sky busting, OOS duck commanders will be there in force before too long. Heck, we even have out of state guides setting up shop nowadays.

I think most folks have wized up the last couple of years and just not said much about ducks on Facebook, etc. It's worth noting that the GWs also use social media and will track people down who they THINK have done something wrong!!!
