    Guns are NOT registered.

There is a subset of guns residing in Texas that do need to be registered, not to the State but to FedGov. Those are guns that are covered by the NFA.

I guess I'll have to do some
Research in the states he lived to see whether they are registered. I have no idea which state he bought what , and he may not even remember. I know besides Tx he's lived in Louisiana,Arkansas, Michigan, Iowa, Colorado and Wyoming.

No, you don't. Even if the guns were bought in a state where they had to be registered, if the guns aren't in that state any more that state has no interest in or jurisdiction over the guns. As long as he does not possess a firearm he's fine. There's no gun registration in Texas, so you don't need to do anything with them here. As others have said, y'all are really overthinking this.

It blows my mind the perception that exists about gun registration. A friend of mine was going through a divorce and was keeping a deer rifle her husband bought. Idiot ex-husband wanted the gun put in her name. Even the goofy lawyers asked about how to do that. She asked me and I told her to tell them to go pound sand. She has the gun as the issue got dropped when she stood firm.

Maybe we are overthinking this, but he's paranoid about it being an issue once he's released and I don't want it to be on me if something were to come up later that I should
              Have done but didn't.

While we're on this subject, how far does the law define "possession"? What if I give him a ride in my truck and forget I have a gun in there or have one on me? (I have a CHL) or if he comes over to my house for supper or something. What about all the guns I have in there?
