OT- getting an internet domain name

OK guys, being "occupationally challenged" in the new vocabulary, I had a brainstorm.

Without a lot of effort, I found 2 small companies in the industry segment I have worked in (licensing pre-designed portions of semiconductors to chip designers to reduce their design cycle time, etc.) who are willing to sign-up with me as a manufacturer's rep. I believe without a lot more effort I can increase that number to 6 or 10- since they're unfortunately 100% commission type deals. I have an ACT! database with over 20k names of people in my industry to 'start' with.

Doing that would allow me to 1. put on my resume I'm not unemployed, but self employed, 2. might help with taxes for business expenses and travel, 3. I have a feeling I'm doing something, and 4. you don't know, I might actually make some money on it.

Anyway..... What's the best way to get a domain name so I can setup up a website and have an email address that is not @yahoo.com for the business? I went to GoDaddy (amazing how well Superbowl advertising works- she, I mean they, came to mind asap).

How do I do this? Does email automatically some with it? is there some other place to get a domain name and web hosting that's better/ cheaper? I know the web hosting and email will cost me more than $9.99/year, I don't know how much more.

You can use just about any webhost to get your domain name when you sign up for their service. Companies like Dreamhost and Hostican all provide that service. plus many will give you the domain registration for free when you sign a one year contract. Google for a webhost and you will find a million of them. I mention the ones up top because I have used them and they are reliable.

Yes if you register a domain with GoDaddy, they will though in 1 free e-mail address a year. If you want more than that they will sell you a package with more at a fairly reasonable price (I think 5 accounts is $20.00). Fairly easy. PM me your phone number if you need help.

One thing to consider (although you probably have already) ... you might want to change webhosts at some point. If so, your domain name should be portable. They may all be nowadays, I dunno. It's been awhile since I worked in IT.

To give you an idea on cost. This is fairly typical for what is provided.
            Hostican

So for $90/year you get unlimited email accounts, more space than you will ever use and more bandwidth than you will ever use. Many providers are in this ballpark as far as price, although many have much less web space and bandwidth.

And I just found this at Dreamhost but you have to hurry to get it. Now this is a screaming deal (but only 30 left).

the email will require some sort of email hosting service/email server so it is more than just getting a domain name and putting your name in front of it. There is a DNS entry as part of your domain service to point to that email server on top of it.

That said, there are literally hundreds of services to host your DNS and domain name at all kinds of prices, so get whats best for you. it all points back to the top DNS servers all across the world so it wont get lost in the shuffle.

Like others have stated, there are planty of sites that can do what you're looking to do for a reasonable price. BUT, let me throw in my $0.02, don't use 1&1 Web Hosting (www.1and1.com). They just screwed me out of about $350.00. I'd never do business with them again. There are just too many others out there willing to provide a good service for a good price and stand behind their product and services.

My personal email is on yahoo. My last job had a company domain name, but somehow it was linked to yahoo, so I was able to check my personal and business email from my yahoo email account. Would yahoo be a hosting service, in that case?

                  Thanks for the info.
