Start of a string of bad luck?

They say bad comes in 3's....
    1) Get to work, smell anti freeze unable to find source.
    2) Go to lease mgrs place to pickup lease ride. Let it run about ten minutes. Head for my house, it's about 9 pm. Get about 1/2 way home do another gauge check. Everything's green. Get down the road another minute or three and temp gauges pegged way past 260° [emoji33][emoji33]. I pull to the ditch, no shoulder and kill it. Call him, he's just pulled or about to pull in his driveway. I give him my location. Try the remove the radiator cap. Coolant starts trying to come out. I retighten cap. Check over flow reservoir got about 1" in the bottom.
Double check for leaks. Didn't see any. I check the cap make sure it's tight, feels loose. Hmmm. So I push down on it and turn, it tightens AND then a GEYSER of coolant. So glad I learned to keep my face from over top of a hot radiator cap. I try like the dickens to get it back on, I couldn't stand the heat, I let loose of the cap and ran. After the geyser quit I checked the fluid level. It looked like it was about 2/3 empty. Couldn't find nary a lick of water.
Buddy shows up tows me to town, couple 3 - 4 miles. Get 4 gallons of distilled water. Add pert near full one to the radiator. Start truck, let it idle, thermostat cycles, refill to top. We also filled coolant reservoir. All told 2 gallons.
I'm holding frozen pkg of chicken breast in my left hand hoping to stave off the blister. It's opening weekend.

Never open a radiator with bare hands. Even when cold.
Good luck to ya and change out the thermostat. 30 minutes and could be the solution

sounds like a sticky thermostat. be sure to boil the new one before installing it I just went through a thermostat issue on my jeep and the first thermostat i bought didn't open all the way.
