    East Texas feeder Huntin' trick

Those of you who hunt over feeders in the Piney Woods may consider this. Many years ago I was pondering how to get deer closer to me when I was just learning to bow hunt. I hunted in tree stands, almost always in a pine tree. I also hunted about 20 yards from a feeder. I'm always scent conscious, and use scent eliminator sprays on my body, clothes, and boots. One day after filling my feeder I decided to save the corn sacks. I went home and put my ghillie suit inside the corn sack. I also made a few fresh cuts of pine straw and added to the bag, then closed it up for two days. Then one morning I went and sat on the ground near my feeder in my full ghillie suit. I wasn't hunting as this was a week or two before the opener. I was simply testing the theory that if I smelled like the food the deer where looking for maybe I could get a close shot at them. Well after my feeder went off I waited motionless. I was probably 30 yards from my feeder, on the ground with my back against a pine. 5 deer came in to the feeder. Two young bucks and three does. Every once in a while a deer would look my direction. After they had cleaned up the corn under the feeder. The three does walked straight toward me. The Bucks did as well, but they stayed behind the three does. They looked at me with their noses in the air trying to figure out what I was. Eventually curiosity got the best of them and all 5 where within 15 yards of me. One doe came all the way to me and put her nose against my ghillie suit, sniffing and checking the ground for more corn. Her hot breath was right in my face as I held mine trying not to spook her. What seemed like forever was probably only a minute then once they realized there was no more corn they all walked away. All this to stay if you smell like what the deer are wanting (corn), and your scent is masked naturally (pine) you have a great chance at bringing deer in close. My dad and grandfather thought I was nuts for putting my clothes in a corn sack. They eventually realized it worked. Although they never tried it . Happy hunting!

    Seems logical. I'll try it.

Makes sense to me. You might be careful adding mesquite beans to your corn sacks out there in west tx...could get a thorn in that ghillie suit.

      Guess you could use cedar.

I can't say if it will work on our place out west or not since this is my first year there. I will only speak to the 30 years I've been bowhunting East Texas.

Anyone know a way I can fit my clothes into a vanilla extract bottle?
Maybe a ship in a bottle trick...

Just got a cheap ghille off amazon that smells like the dumpster behind a Chinese plastic factory. Once I figure out how to get that smell off, it's going in a corn sack. Thanks for the great tip

Great method/idea and so simple, I'm saving a couple of corn sacks.

Put in the washing machine (or in a big dishpan) and wash it in water with Con-San Triple Action 20 disinfectant... Works wonders... may have to do it more than once, but that stuff is great for taking out oh-dear's...
