Any border patrol agents in here?

How do you like it? Is it a good job?

I know a great young guy that got laid off recently, and has been searching like crazy for another job with no success. I see that BP is hiring here in central Texas...

    Any tips, suggestions, or advice?

My stepson has been with the BP for about a year and really likes
the job. Stiff standards to get in, 6 month training camp, lots of chasing
through South Texas brush but the pay is very good. He has no regrets.

Let me know what you want to know? I started with the Patrol. The work is not easy but rewarding...some duty stations are good and some not so good (some cities/towns not too great for family living), but the money is . Job security is great!! (if your head is on straight) The work can be dangerous like anything else when you carry a duty weapon. I currently work for ICE as an Immigration Enforcement Agent in Pearsall, Texas. Money is... and I travel the world escorting bad guys (level 3 detainees) to far away places on the government's dime. ICE is also reponsible for job-site enforcement and like BP we are also hiring all the time. Department Of Homeland Security is growing and is aggressively recruitting from many areas especially the Arm Forces. Good luck to your good friend.

                x2.

if a BP agent shoots a drug dealer in the arse as he's running back into mexico they should hand him a medal, not a prison uniform.....

Work is good and lots of it. Pay is also good. You better tell him to hurry up and put his application in because we don't know if 'bama will maintain the hiring. Let me know what I can help you with.

I'm a US Customs and BP Officer at the Houston seaport. The money and ot(double time) is nice. I'm on a Narcotics team so IMO have the best job at the seaport.

I left the Houston Fire Dept as a FF/EMT to take this job for only the money and I have regretted it for sometime but still staying where I'm at. We are now covered LEO status and have the 20 year retirement and they count my 4 yrs USCG toward retirement and senority. Good luck to him.

I here BP agents have more fun so he should go for it.

Am I eligible for ICE or Border Patrol? Or am I already to old to change agencies? I know with civil service fire depts. the cut-off age is 35. Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately yes about the age, you can't be older than 37(Maybe 36) by oath of office. Firefighting is an awsome profession and I miss it. I left HFD because I had a short time invested w/ them and my Chief, Captain persuaded me it was a better career choice for my family w/ the GS-11 salary after only 2 years of service w/ DHS.

I'd stay where your at w/ the time you've invested. Good luck brother and stay safe!

The cut off age is 37, mandatory retirement at 57. Unless you are in the military then the cut off age is 40 retire at 60. But it has to be with in 6 months of your detachment from the armed services.
Yes BP agents can have a lot of fun. It is like any job you can make of it what you want. It is always something different.
Catching illegals and catching dope is a lot like bowhunting. You go out and look for sign. You find the routes of travel. You set up and wait. Then the chase begins.

That figures .....always a day late and a dollar short. I just thought I'd ask. I've had several friends recently leave for jobs with Secret Service, Office of Attorney General, BP, PD......Seems like they are doing really well.

Funny how the government says you can't discriminate based on age or race, but they seem to do it alot.......
