Planting food plots with no rain?

Things at my property are just mainly dusty and sandy. I have some wheat, rye, clover mix and want to go ahead and plant. It was supposed to be 60 percent rain chance here today, but now down to 15 percent and little rain forecasted through 15 days. If I plant and drag to cover, will the seed last a few weeks until we get rain?

We do it a lot commercially. We call it "dusting in" the seed. Would much prefer to plant it into moisture but thats not always possible. Any seeds that survive the birds will sit there indefinitely until there is adequate moisture to germinate.

Happened to us last year. Got a fair stand after it rained good couple weeks later.

Man I planted three weeks ago and got some rain the next day. Now no rain for three weeks. I'm afraid I'm going to lose it all.

Try soaking the seed in water overnight. This will allow the seed to soak up water, will actually swell up. This might allow the seed to send down a root deep enough to get moisture from the ground until it rains.

I've done it several times over the years. Called it "dry sowing". Seems to work ok, I guess. 4 years ago, I watched to large flocks of turkeys wear my food plot out for 3 weeks before it ever rained. I put out a seed blend that has 9 different seeds in it. Turkeys had a dang field day before it ever rained.

Well, I planted yesterday and we had over an inch of rain last night, so hopefully that'll kick things off!

Sounds like great timing! You should be good for the last week of bow season for sure.

Farmers do this all the time. You just need to be sure there is not enough moisture in the ground to sprout the seeds before it rains!

Planting dry is actually better than planting with small amounts of moisture with a bleak moisture forecast outlook.
