Last November, I weighed in at 385 lbs. I was stuck hunting from either 2 man ladder stands or ground blinds. I have since lost 100 lbs. (still have 60 lbs. to go). Would I be safe to use a stand with a capacity of 300 lbs? By the time I add my pack and bow I am over 300. When I was younger, I didn't worry too much about this bit of difference, but now I think about it. I always had the attitude that they build them to withstand more than they advertise so i just went ahead and hunted. Nowadays (I'm 54 now), I think about the limits more and would like the green screen opinions. What do y'all think?

I clicked on this thread to encourage you to lose weight, but you've been doing an awesome job with that!
If you're 285 and looking at a 5-7 lb bow/gun and a 10-15 lb pack, I would have zero reservations about using a stand rated for 300 lbs.
Hang on or ladder stands will probably be safer than climbers due to the loads, but I wouldn't worry about a climber either.
Keep up the good work and have a great season.
Oh yeah, and wear your harness.

If u were too fall u would be screwed! I'm 250 and can at least bench and pull up my own weight! So I'm still comfortable in a ladder, lockon, or climber..if I couldn't pull myself up or hold myself I would hunt out of a tree but a ground or box blind! I'm 43 and not in too bad of shape, congrats on your weight loss, keep it going Sir!

You "could" be fine. That being said if your 285 butt nekked you will be pushing the maximum allowable weight for a 300# stand. Once you're dressed in clothes, hunting boots, hunting gear, etc. you could be risking injury. I would lose the rest of the weight that you are well on your way to losing and hunt from a tree stand next year. Congrats on the weight loss.Last edited by AntlerCollector; 09-22-2016, 05:00 AM.

Dave - 1st, Continued congrats on the weight loss!
The question I would ask is do you need to be up to hunt the area? I have found in most cases I don't and I'm much more comfortable not climbing and the safety aspect is a real bonus.
Keep up the great work on the weight.

Tree stand capacity question
My hunting buddy is around 310. After repeated use he started breaking the welds on his summit climber. I redid the cracked welds for him but then it just started bending the braces. He wised up and went to the hd model. It never fully gave out on him but it was possible. I would suggest either waiting till you drop a few more lbs or going for one rated for 350lb.
