its gradually gotten worse the last couple of years. I settle the pin on the dot but my index finger wont touch off the trigger, then when I start to actually hit the trigger the sight pin moves causing one of those "whoa" moments and then its a severe flinch trying to keep from launching an arrow where I don't want it to go or the bow letting back down. in an earlier thread I inquired about thumb releases but im not sure that will fix this problem. any suggestions?

I shot an index release and had TP, I switched to a thumb and it was immediately gone. Over time I developed it with the thumb though, the best solution I found was to draw the bow and never even try to touch the release off, just float the pin over the X. I would do this a lot. I would also get very close to the target, draw back, close my eyes and practice touching off the release without any aiming, basically let the bow surprise you. A hay bail is best for this as you cannot miss.

Target Panic is all mental and a struggle for a lot of folks. Back Tension releases can help, but you have to be dedicated. Lots of different ways to fight TP.
My TP was exactly like yours and I still fight it to a certain extent at times. l they way I got control mentally was with a tape made by a member on here and with it's use and a Back Tension release, I finally got it under control, but it is something like a drug addict. Once you have it, you will always have it. you can control it.
Talk to AJ, the TP Guru on here and let him explain his CD specifically made for you to help with the mental aspect of TP. Do a search and you will see several members on here that have had success with his CD, me included.

I have suffered from it for my entire life. Only after months of intense training 30 years ago was I able to overcome it. Even then if I don't continue the training, it comes right back.
To combat it without intense training I do two things. First off I use only one sight pin for all ranges. It is sighted in about 6 inches high (Just over a round circle) at 20 yards. I do this to stop from releasing when the pin hits the target. It gives me the opportunity to get settled in before release. Otherwise when the pin hits the bull, goodbye arrow.
The next is I choose a release that is not a trigger pull but actually a finger release. When I relax my finger, the arrow can go.Last edited by wal1809; 09-14-2016, 08:25 AM.

All the suggestions posted can help, and especially the meditation CD's but you have to WANT it to help. If you get one and are already convinced it won't work, don't waste your money... This whole thing is mental, and you have to put yourself in the right frame of mind for ANY of it to work. To this day, I still listen to the session before I know I'm going to be shooting my bow whether hunting or just target shooting. It helps me relax and I think it along with changing releases, backing the poundage off on my bow, and other things all contribute to me being able to control my TP.
Good luck!

It was a minor issue with me and then it became more of a problem. Started out with drawing, anchoring, aiming, holding, and letting down. Did it 20 times then put the bow up without an arrow released. Repeated this about 5-6 times over 10 days and then started blank baling--going through the process above but actually squeezing off an arrow but with eyes closed, focused totally on the squeeze-off. Did this for 5-6 periods, then started shooting at small spots on the target from close range. Took care of the majority of the problem for me, but occasionally it creeps back and I go back to the routine again, but usually only twice for each part. I also try to be very, very focused on my entire shot routine. I still struggle some because I want the pin to stop in the dot and stay there but I know it can't/won't and I have just tried to live with itl
Can't remember where I picked up on this--but was either here or on AT.

For me it is a fear of missing the target. Find a safe place to shoot. Shoot very close and try another anchor. I now wrap my thumb around the back of my neck while using a trigger release. This and pulling thru the shot has helped my flinch. Get a judo point and go stump shooting.... This helped me too....its all mental but unless you have it you just don't understand.

I deal with this for ten years some times I would jump so bad before pulling the release I would send arrow 6 inches above target. I got a hec's suit last year and when I've got that suit on bull's eye every time. I'm thinking the carbon fiber in suit keeps me from shaking so much. Another thing u might look into is yoga inhale exhale before ur shot.
