I you think you aren't calling enough, you are probably calling too much!

Location is the key, scout the ponds out and figure out where they want to be. FYI where the ducks are sitting at 9:30 after you finish your deer hunt is not likely where they landed when they arrived.

        Duck hunting help

I hunt some land near Westphalia. If you need some help or pointers feel free to get a hold of me I'm not to far away from ya. I don't know a ton but I'd be willing to share what I do know. I'd even let you borrow some deeks. It usually doesn't get really good down this way till after the split.

I wish I knew something about duck hunting cuz I would jump on that duck lease that is in the classifieds on here. Seems to be a good deal.

Scout your ponds. Like mentioned above. Go before actual season opens and watch a few ams where exactly the ducks are going to. Don't be visible when your doing so. Shooting time is a time 30 mins before sunrise each day so you will be setting up in the dark. A good headlamp is your best friend. I only use avian x decoys. Realistic and decently priced and good material. I'd start w a whistle more than a call. Watch a few YouTube videos on how to use a duck whistle, and don't over do it. Pretty much the only duck that's coming in now is teal but if you don't know how to I'd em just wait till the season opens. Duck hunting is an addiction it's really fun.

Early season depending on the size of the pond, you typically want to have a bigger spread of decoys. Practice calling everytime you get in the truck. For now, just bring a whistle. Like stated above, you shouldn't have to call too much in a pond and you will learn that too much calling is worse than no calling. Be in good cover, wear a mask (or face paint) and comfortable waders. I know for me in SETX, we cannot shoot mottled ducks (black ducks) in the first two weeks of season, can someone weigh in on that for this area?

Sit back with some binos and scout them. Identify what is frequenting the ponds and go from there. I use greenhead gear decoys even though cheaper ones will work fine. Unless the ponds are really large I wouldn't worry about decoying or calling birds, just sneak up and jump shoot the birds.

Doesn't take much as far as decoys getting ducks to come in. When I hunted west texas, the ponds had high walls and we walked up and skillet shot them. I would make yourself a blind since it's private land. Don't try to call until you get good with it. Decoys may be enough. Might try a mojo. Get a cd and practice your calls while you drive. I don't duck hunt much anymore, but someone on here could probably suggest a call.

As far as ID, learn silhouettes, flight patterns, and calls. The ducks actually give you several good ID hints if they are in a group, just have to learn the signs. I have an old bird ID book from the 1960s and a general hunting guide the NRA put out in the 80s. Taught me a lot of what I know.

We had a long narrow pond on our river lease that we hunted at daylight, no decoys and no blind. Lined up down the side of the pond and on one end and had a great time bustin them as they flew in and down the pond.
