    Simmer down.

Don't put too much stock in Game 1s for P5s vs. lesser opponents. Clemson struggled (in a game 2). TN struggled. Arky struggled. Then again, it was a 15 point win for MSU. I didn't watch it, so I don't know if they truly "struggled", were conservative in their play calling, or made some mistakes.

I do know that MSU is historically a good team with a solid defense, even since losing Narduzzi. They will be a good early season barometer for ND.

I think most agree that, realistically, the Horns probably made too big a jump in the AP on the strength of a week 1 win over ND. However, every subsequent win by the horns, every subsequent win by their opponents and every loss for teams ranked ahead and around them provides ever-so-slightly more justification for the ranking. In these days of the CFP, SOS and "style points" matter, particularly in jockeying for position in the early season. Like it or not, so does program tradition. tu (and ND, and even to a lesser degree,MSU) has all of that going for them...for now. How ND looks against MSU on Saturday will matter in the perception of the Horn's current ranking, just as how Arky fares in their remaining schedule will play a role in TCU's subsequent rankings.

      See. I was right. Lol.

Michael, wisconsin made a bigger jump for beating LSU. It wasn't just Texas.

Who wins when Iowa State and Kansas play? The right to the last spot in the Big 12. FTR, I have Kansas winning, for their only other win this season.

HOU being offered a B12 conference spot will likely be the determining factor if Herman leaves for another school

Petrino is garbage and will quit on his team in a New York second
would you want this moron coaching your team ?

IMHO the chances UH gets a big 12 bid are essentially zero

I know. But Wisky isn't as relevant around here (aside from the fact they DESTROYED LSU! ) But seriously, both Texas and Wisconsin benefitted from beating highly rated (blue blood) programs (which both potentially have problems of their own.) Similarly, how LSU continues to fare against remaining opponents either provides justification, or not, to Wisky making such a jump.

I think most everyone agrees that preseason polls are a joke. If you agree with that you can't then complain about teams making too big of jumps after week 1. There should be lots of big moves the first few weeks.

My complaint (not sure that would be the correct word) is not about Texas jumping from unranked to ranked #11 as much as it about the ranking number itself. Texas has too much history of less than mediocrity the past several years to be given that much credit. Ask me again this time next week and my tune may have changed.

I would probably rank the Aggies ahead of Texas just because they have been a better team the last few years AND they are a more mature team. They do have their own demons but again, next Saturday will be telling.

                      My thoughts exactly!

I am guessing it hinges on a couple of things. How well LSU and ATM finish the season!

It will be a race to see who gets Herman!

Until November rankings are meaningless anyway.

ASU beat Tech in an ugly game. I didn't watch the entire thing but we can never expect to win 8 games without a defense. We play UTSA down here this week. I think it is an easy win but I am still hoping for a 6 win season.

I am excited about the OU and OSU game. I would like to see OSU knocked down a notch but I do not think Stoops will be able to rally the Sooners to compete. I hope I am wrong.

I am really looking forward to watching this UH- Louisville game develop. The upcoming weeks will give us a chance to watch Lamar Jackson play a bit more. It should setup a great showdown if they both go in to the game unbeaten.

I expect UT v Cal to be a boring game that is effectively over in the second quarter. I look forward to the AandM Auburn game. I think it is a close battle.

FTR, I'm not complaining about them making too big of a jump. I'd be "complaining" more if it was my team, but only because I've seen it happen to my team too many times before! Honestly, I'd rather see the big jumps we've seen in recent years than the old, archaic philosophy that a team shouldn't drop if they don't lose.

I don't think they're completely meaningless, especially for Group of 5 teams, like Houston, that will need all the help they can get. It's obviously not as critical for most P5 teams where, essentially, if you win all of your games (or even just all of your conference games) then, chances are high that you're in. But, beating even a pre-season Top 5 team will carry some weight for those teams when it gets close to selection time. Every ranking as we approach November will increasingly help determine the pecking order when the committee convenes for their first ranking.

Do I think Texas is ranked too hi in AP right now? Yes. Do I think they'll get better over next month? Yes. Can they win Big 12? Yes.

Glad we're in the discussion, it's been a minute.
