    Elk hunting pack

Not backcountry camping but a pack for a days worth of supplies, snacks etc. is a backpack or waist pack a better choice? Archery so I like that the waist pack is out of the way but always preferred a backpack. I have a sling pack I really like but not sure on all day comfort. I also have an Oakley kitchen sink bag that's awesome but pretty big. What do you guys use?

I've been using the Sitka Flash 20 for a couple years. Love it. It's light weight, plenty of storage for a day pack, and can compress down.

I have the Sitka Ascent 12 pack and love it. It is a great roomy day pack and has room for a water bladder and a very intuitive bow strap.

I went with a Rancho Safari 6 1/2 pack. It is a fanny pack with shoulder straps, waterproof, camera pouch and plenty of room for my day gear. I always sweat on my back with a back pack even in freezing cold weather, especially after a long hike... I wanted the pack off my back, but didn't want the weight/strain of a heavy belt around my waist. This was the best of both world. It's well made, triple stitched and after over 15 years of use still looks almost brand new with all zippers/buttons/snap hardware intact.

I got it without the Cat Quiver... Call and talk to Jerry. He can even make custom pockets for your special needs. I'm a lefty so he made me one I could store my video camera in with my draw hand with fleece lining. He's a great guy to work with too. Don't know if Rancho Safari still exhibits in the TTHA shows, but Jerry is the guy that used to stand in the booth with that dang ghillie suit on like a mannequin and when folks would walk by or stop and look at the suit and touch it while examining it, he'd move a hand or turn his head... Saw some folks really freak out over the years!!

Thanks and keep the suggestions coming. I was focused on a days worth of supplies and not thinking about the prospect of packing out an elk. Is that the reason behind the bigger packs with a frame?

                I have a Sitka Alpine ruck that's a bomber 1-2 day pack.

Super lightweight and carries a day hunt load very well.

I switched over to a Kifaru Mountain Warrior and I don't have a use for the Sitka anymore, if you are interested i'll cut you a deal.

The optimist carries a large pack. The pessimist carries............

I have hiked into the back country for 27 years and always used a basic (large) pack from academy which cost about $75
No need to spend a lot of money to hunt out west

While this is true, if I have to carry 100lbs of meat out, a $75 pack from Academy is the last thing I want on my back.

Had a badlands 2200 and went to Stone Glacier Serac much more comfortable and bags can be interchanged on the frame depending on your needs

I've gone through a number of packs the last several years. Eberlestock, Kuiu, Tenzing, and now Kifaru.
The Kifaru is the best pack I've owned - by far.

That Rancho Safari has an optional "meat pouch" that attaches to the upper part of the shoulder straps and sits atop the main pack if you do have to help pack out an animal... I've always hunted with an outfitter/guide... That's the MAIN reason I do too... so I don't have to pack one out myseff... Having said that, I do help with the packing, and that meat pouch will hold a full size bull elk hind quarter pretty well and balances pretty good.

...and to the other poster, to me and optimist stops in town before going up to the lodge and buys ice and dry ice for all his coolers BEFORE the hunt. A pessimist just says, "well IF we happen to kill something, we'll come back to town for ice... I've dumped ice more than once before leaving for that long ride back home too...
