    Boat Guys...HELP!

Looking for some opinions or maybe even just a shoulder to cry on.
Here is the scoop in a short, short. (still a long read)
Last week I changed the water pump on my 2009 115Etec (51hrs) but it was not peeing out water enough so I went ahead and took it to a Shallow Sport dealer (Sportsman in San Benito). I got a call the next day and was told nothing wrong was found and boat was ready for pick up. I was told that it was put in the tank and ran great for 20min. I was also told that they pulled up the report and it showed that the engine had 51hrs with the last "hot temp indication" being 2hrs prior which is about the first time that I noticed the lack of water peeing out and reason I changed the pump. The only thing I could think of was the cheap bunny ears I had just purchased since I misplaced my others. I told them to go ahead and do a complete maintenance (filters, lower unit oil change, plugs etc) since the boat was already there. This is where it got ugly. I got a call the next day and was told they needed my permission to find out why the motor would no longer start (just crank). I said "umm yeah, of course". Later that day I got another call and was told it was my wiring harness ($1500) but they would pay the labor since it happened while they were conducting the maintenance. I couldn't see how the WHOLE wiring harness went bad and wasn't even sure if it could of been something that they did so I didn't exactly give them the go ahead just yet. He agreed to look further into the problem and see if they could pinpoint something. Well I just got a call back and now I'm being told it is the computer ($2250) but once again they will cover the labor. So instead of a $462 water pump inspection and maintenance....I'm looking at around $2700. What are your thoughts on "liability" here? I know things go bad, I know things happen, I am not trying to screw anyone or get anything for free but really curious on peoples thoughts here. Just pay up or do I have a reason to feel like they are liable for any reason? Please, im not looking for negative boat owner lectures as this is not my first boat. Just looking for some opinions and needed to vent a bit. Thanks fellas

you took it in...it was running...was even told... "nothing wrong with it "...and after a 'regular maintenance' it is not.
Yeh.. the shop be fixing the boat on their dime.

I would have them explain to me exactly what happened. Then I would be getting higher ups a that location involved. Sounds fishy to me. I took my boat to a dealer to have a computer print out and check up before I sold it so that I could show to any potential buyers. When I picked it up I was told it wasn't running well and needed $800 carb rebuild. I thought it was odd bc I took the boat out that entire weekend before with the family and didn't have even 1 problem. I took it home and noticed that 2 of the 3 cards were kicked over to "emergency" mode. I flipped the back to "normal" and ran it at the lake with 0 problems. I believe they purposely did that to make some money thinking I wouldn't notice.

Yeah no. Is this a big or reputable shop?
Hey Mr Buckshot your boat is good to go no issues.
Ok, well since you got it go ahead and give me a routine maint.
Hey Mr. Buckshot, we drained the lower unit oil and I'll be dang if the computer didnt go out.

        No.

Ugh man that's some bs right there. Yeah and that's a fear I have too. If I stand ground, they have my motor in their hands and can set me up for failure. I'm not calling boat shops crooked or anything, just a little paranoid at this point I guess.

Very reputable shop. Been around a long time. First time dealing with them though. With that being said, I have only spoken to whom I think is their lead service rep. I have not made any additional calls just yet. Been waiting to hear back until this morning.

Defiantly sounds fishy to me. As stated above I'd like to hear how it progresses from a simple water pump change out to the ECM burning out.

From what I was told is "they go bad but since it went bad while it was here, we are willing to cover the labor". Now this is what I was told when they said it was the wiring harness. This morning when I was told it was the ECM...well I went blank for a while and kinda felt like I was about to black out so.. I'm making some phone calls and get some info before I call the owner.

I would ask to be shown how they came to that conclusion, not told, shown. That computer should be able to spit out all kinds of info. Some motors will go into a safety mode and either wont run at all or will run at only low RPM if a code has been triggered.

                  I would ask for codes

Well that is EXACTLY what happened. I am not leaving anything out or trying to sugar coat anything to my advantage. Plain and simple facts but Im just not sure who is liable at this point or even if I should stand my ground here. I wish it was a local shop (160miles from here) so I could speak to the owner in person. Wondering if I should wait to make a trip rather than call?
