    question bout deer behavior

this same buck has had a fascination with this branch since last season and im just wondering is that normal behavior? I placed the camera there just because I was curious what was going on because although all our bucks had lost their antlers he was still coming by and making a scrape and well hes steadily been coming back time after time to that branch. can anyone school me on whats going on.

deer are creatures of habit ... that's his licking branch

he probably has several others within his area

he's also marking his scent with his orbital gland

It's a licking branch. This is the place a deer will return to even when other scrapes go unrefreshed. Scrapes without licking branches seldom are revisited. Bucks will chew the ends of the branch and deposit scent from their pre-orbital glands on them. Another signpost in the deer woods.

We seem to have a spot they hit year round too. I was at property last week and happened to notice how fresh the scrape was again.

Licking branches are gold mines of information. They'll be used year after year. Make sure nothing happens to it.

I have a stand about 20' off the ground and have watched two different bucks go to the same licking branchs for two years. Fun to watch!
