    HELP. Quick Question

So I went to check on my parents house since they are out of town. The freezer in the garage lost power and everything has spoiled. It appears that the electric had tripped. I haven't had the guts to open the freezer but I know it's full of meat because there is a line of dried blood leaking from the freezer. I hit the reset button on the outlet and it kicked on again. Do I let everything re-freeze or start cleaning before it is re frozen? I would think it would be much more pleasant after it re freezes. Who has an idea???

I would let it refreeze. Less stink and mess.

Depending on how much liquid is in the bottom if you refreeze is you may not be able to get the last of the packages out of the bottom. But you can just let it thaw back out after refreezing and getting most of the meat out without all of the stank.

It's a stand up freezer so I think most of the liquid drained out. I wish we didn't live in the city so I could just roll that thing into a field and burn it. It's bad....

          Hold your breath
Open the door so all liquid runs out
          Close door
          Let it all refreeze
          Clean blood up with bleach

I would let it freeze, tie the door closed and dig a hole and bury it in my pasture. Lol. Not sure what to do in the city.

Had one do that at lease. Of course it was about a month till we got back down. Duct tape the door shut, strapped it also and threw everything into the burn pile. Didn't even attempt to open it.

Let it refreeze. Then you can pull all frozen meat out without that bad of smell. Use hot water and a rag to get the bloody frozen spots off the bottom. I've done both methods and the frozen option is way better.

Bleach and water mixture will clean it once you are brave enough to empty it. Then let it run with plates/pans of charcoal and baking soda on most of the shelves. Change out the charcoal and baking soda every few days or once a week until the smell is gone.

We have cleaned a few after the hurricanes 8-11 years ago. I still have several running strong that made it through Rita and Ike.

mine did the same but was a chest freezer, I refroze it all til I had time to roll it out ot the garage crack it open to let the big red ice block melt enough so I could get ot off the bottom I a big piece, once I had it clear of contents used bleach and water in the bottom and left it open in the sun for a day, then put baking soda all over the inside and plugged it back in, smelled clean and then 2 months later it quit working

Duct tape the doors and haul to the scrap yard

Thanks everyone. I cleaned up all the run off blood with bleach and water. Was able to get the freezer back up and running and will let it all freeze back up. Will get it cleaned up in a couple of days.
