Didn't want to hijack the elk thread so I thought I'd put it here. I live in west Texas (3200ft) but spend almost all of our vacation time in the mountains (weeks out of the year skiing/fishing/hunting/staying at our cabin in Ruidoso). The last 4-5 years, I feel like crud on first night and day. I can only assume this to be altitude sickness. It was never a problem in the past. I'll hydrate like a camel and pop some Alka Seltzer as suggested by my hunting partner/physician. Headed to my elk and bear hunt in Trinidad CO in two weeks. Any suggestions besides running bleachers while smoking to help?

They make those work out mask that simulate altitude for conditioning. I get out to that area a couple times a year and it takes me a day or two to acclimate to 8000 plus ft.

You'll find plenty more articles, but this explains it pretty well.
