What do you hate most about public land...

hunting? It could be the challenge of not being permitted to leave up your gear for more than 24 hours, items being stolen, rude hunters, trash, etc.

what solutions have you come up with to make it less burdensome?

mine has to be a toss-up between not being allowed to leave stands/blinds out for more than 24hrs @ the vine and the short 2-week hunting slots at BB lake.

I have attempted to pack light while hunting the vine, but with my bow, camel back, hunting pack, and ghostblind i still find that no matter how i cut it i end up soaked to the bone in sweat by the time i reach my stand, even if i'm only wearing a t-shirt and pants on the way in. something about hiking miles with 30-35lb on the back will do that.

This year i picked up an ol'man climbing stand, which weighs in similar to my climbing sticks + lock on, but less cumbersome...hopefully that will be a great alternative to the lock on and/or ladder stands i've used in the past out there.

$&@*y access. I can get an elk off a mountain easier than a white tail out of public land. Out of state public land make Texas public land a joke... Which 90% is

this! although, where I hunt, I've found some awesome areas that most either don't know about or are too lazy to pursue. accessing it by boat helps too, but the drive in access is horrible

                          1. The way people treat the land. Trash everywhere, people trespassing on neighboring properties, people leaving stands and baiting where it's against the rules, people stealing. I don't like carrying my stand and all in every hunt either, but I get why the rule is there and I'd really like to not have my stands stolen.

                          2. The fact that there is so little public land in Texas and access sucks.

                          3. The lack of larger tracts of land and backcountry style hunting where one can hike in to remote areas and hunt out of a spike camp.

Sure wish Texas could hit rewind and make better decisions on retaining land. Every time I hear people complain about turning over Federal land back to the people, I can't help but think of how ridiculous that idea is. It sounds great on the surface until you realize that "turn over to the people" means that it's sold to the highest bidder and public access will end. If you look at what's going on in the western states now with land transfers, it's not like the states are allowing public access after transfer in most cases, even if they do retain ownership. I deeply resent that Texas is the poster child for what it looks like when a state sells off all of it's federally granted lands. I also hate that one political party wants to end 2A and along with it, hunting, while the other wants to "return federal lands to the people", which would virtually end what little public access remains. Why do we need to return them to the people? Federal lands are already ours, and in the overwhelming majority of places are available to access by the public for hunting and other outdoor use.

There would be a lot more public land if UT would open up some the vast thousands of acres they have stached.
Access sucks to what we have.

I love that access is so limited. It weeds out a lot of the "weekend warriors". I can get way back in and never see anyone more than a mile from the truck. I hang a cheep lock on and take my sticks out with me. I tend to be way more selective tho.
