Help! How do I get draw point for different states? Elk, muleys, and/or bear

So, I have never been hunting out west, but I hope to get out there in the next few years after my kids get a little easier to manage. They are all young now. I may do a guided hunt, but want the option of a diy with drawn tags. How do I go about this? Where is the best places to put in? What does it cost, etc. I know literally zero about this. I. Patient and can wait and build up a few years before I cash them in so keep that in mind. Also, what are some of the really hard ones to draw that may take 10-20 years???

Go to the respective states' websites. All the info you need is there, but basically, when you apply, and do not draw, you will get a preference point. Most of the states have a varience on that theme.

If you want to elk hunt, you can hunt in over-the-counter units in Co. every year while building points in hard to draw units. In Wyo. you have first, second, and third choices. If you don't draw your first choice, you get a point. Do this long enough, and you can draw in the better units. Hope this helps. Keep in mind I'm not an elk hunter, but I know how the system works. I say this just to tell you I don't know where you should hunt, but start while you're young.

Arizona archery elk in unit 1,9,27,10. Maybe in 20 years.

Honestly though, most guys around do months of research in order to figure out their draw strategy. Playing the points game is risky because of point creep, you could also never draw. I say find a unit and learn it well, hunt every year so when you do draw that once in a lifetime tag you have some experience.

In Arizona u have to buy a license that is non-refundable $167 to put in for the draw. So every year ur out that money no matter what. To get a preference you can put in for the draw or just get preference point only. It will depend on the code u enter. Colorado you have to pay for everything up from when u put in for draw. If u don't get drawn u earn a point and they refund ur money. Wyoming is same way but u can buy points only in the summer without going through the draw. Utah if u only want a point then u buy during regular draw. It can get confusing until u read through everything. Each state does their draw different in reference to points. Some states u get drawn by who has most points. Others u get ur name in the draw per how many points, so there is always a slim chance to get drawn w few points. Hope it helps. U can spend many hours researching

What is point creep? And explain researching a draw strategy? Sorry, I'm ignorant to this. I've never hunted public land.

Point creep is when the previous yr it took say 3pts to draw and the next yr it takes 4. More people are putting in for the unit so u need more points to draw. Some people get points to use once for a trophy caliber animal. Some put in points so they can just hunt and not be in a general area. Some people have units that they can get drawn every few yrs and have been able to find the animals and they aren't giving that info up. We r going elk hunting in nov in a very hard unit to hunt but we were able to get drawn w 4 points. My buddy got drawn in a unit w only 2 points a couple yrs ago and killed a 372 but we haven't been drawn since.

You can do all the research on your own and do the applications yourself or you can use one of the application services. I started with Cabelas TAGS about 12 years ago and I have drawn a bunch of great tags. Elk in Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico and this year Arizona. 2 ibex tags in New Mexico, bison in Wyoming, mule deer in Colorado and Nevada, and 2 Iowa deer tags. You pay them a fee per tag but they do the applications and help you pick units and strategies. I apply for 22-23 tags out west each year and no way I could keep it all straight with my schedule. It's an option and it has worked for me. I think it's now called WTA TAGS but there are others.

Nevada will be your best chance at drawing a premium tag without waiting 20 years, but archery only. Most residents I know are drawing the very best tags at 5 years, non ressy at 7-10ish.

You have drawn two Ibex tags? You should play the actual lottery.
