    Protein Alternative

Anybody have any ideas to put in my protein feeders that doesn't break the bank. We have corn feeders running year round. We feed protein most of the year but I'm looking for something a little cheaper to feed thru the winter in addition to the corn. Want to keep the deer and my wallet happy. Anybody got any ideas? I just can't afford 1000lbs of protein a month all year long.

I've heard of folks mixing 50/50 blend of corn and regular horse sweet feed. Tractor Supply sells a sweet feed pretty cheap. I'm not familiar with the nutritional value or long term affects on deer however.

Read this on another site previously .....

Do not use sweet feed for deer!!! It can cause lactic aciddosis in their system and it changes the ph levels in their rumen.A deers ph level has to stay at a neutral 7.0 and feeding deer sweet feeds are not recommended. Also when the ph is changed it kills enzymes and bacteria deer need to break down and start digestion of their food sources( browse, food plots etc..It's even more wastefull than corn.Use a top quality deer feed and you will be doing yourself and your deer a big favor. Hope this helps out some.

Supposedly too much corn is just as bad.

You could start picking up acorns and pouring them into your feeders. If you have more time than money.

Rotate a late season food plot in.

Put your protein on a timer during seer season. Used to do that in Mexico, it also helped keep the bucks around. make a shroud around the timer and have it fall onto a wooden table. Works great

Corn is roughly $7 per bag and you can get MG 20% protein for around $9 per bag.... Mix the 2 50-50 if you want something more than corn.
