    duck calling class

Hey yall! Being a student at Texas State I am trying to find someone who is local and knows a thing or more about duck calling to come to one of our meetings for TxState DuckUnlimited to teach us young hunters how to duck call this semester. Any advice or does anyone know anyone who would be willing to donate their time one evening to do so? I would greatly appreciate it.

We also have a facebook page if you would like to check into what we're going to be doing for the next year.

    Thanks!

Can't help ya, but if you want to see what NOT to do, go to any public lake in the first 2 weeks of duck season.

Check with your RD. They would probably do it, or know someone that would.

I already rely on him for so much already and hes busy with other chapters dinners coming up that Im trying to expand of us not relying on him for everything. Also would be a good opportunity to connect with others outside of DucksUnlimited.

buy a call with the instruction CD, or just search on Youtube and practice in your garage until you sound like it.
Really though,,, no need to call a lot, the whistle is pretty effective.

Buy a whistle... J/k, I know there are a bunch of people that think the duck commander guys are fluff and cliche right now. I've been following them since way before they came out on television. We have VHS tapes of Phil explaining ducks and their calling. The absolute best advice I can give is to find their earliest tapes and study them. We cut our duck hunting teeth on these tapes and have killed a ton of birds following his instruction. As far as finding someone to instruct, I can't help but have a movie night and spend time watching these guys hunt. You'll be a better hunter/caller for it. I still have an old wooden classic commander I carry in my car and practice with it while going down the road. Whatever you do, just remember...there are duck callers and then there are duck killers.

Most people who teach duck calling are more geared to teaching those who call competitively, which is VERY different than calling actual birds.

Like the others have said, bring a couple of calling CDs and have people take turns following the instructions so that way you guys can critique one another against the CD.

I would do it if I was closer.

I would do it if I was a little closer. It's just too far from me. I sell duck calls as a side business and I meet a lot of first time call buyers and people who think they can call. They key is to not blow into the call, it's more of a huff like you're trying to fog up a mirror. Everybody's natural tendency is to blow, and it takes a while to break that tendency. You're cheeks shouldn't move what so ever, it's all in the tongue and diaphragm. Some people can feed call real easy and some can never figure it out, vice versa with a hail call. I can't roll my tongue at all and with the right combination of reeds and my diaphragm I can still imitate it. It takes hours and hours of practice and hours and hours of listening to try and imitate all the different calls a duck can make.

Even at that, everybody blows a duck call different between air flow and voice. I don't think there is such a thing as a crappy call to a degree...basically you just need to keep buying calls and finds the one that you like the best. Everybody hears differently, and ducks talk and hear differently!

After all that said calls are only effective in the opening season it seems like, towards the end whistles and just being quiet do more good.

This is very true, the only issue with the DVDs are you physically don't have somebody there to tell you what you're doing wrong. Bad habits are created from the beginning at that point.

Get you some rattlin' bills and hand corn!!! Late season rut is the best time to rattle in a big ol' drake... If he's fired up, his tail feathers will curl!!

I was so bad a hail callin' my son (who is an amazing caller and relentless duck killer) said I was 'call disabled'.

A year ago yesterday my 01 RAM 1500 was t-boned by a guy going 50, and I was lucky to live, and be OK. There was a concussion diagnosed, which a couple months later the symptoms have eliminated.

When duck season came up, I picked up a call and found I could do a 'respectable' hail call, not great but not embarrassing. Good enough to turn green heads and get them to work the pond!

The lesson learned? Hit yourself in the head hard, and maybe you can call!

Seriously, I learned from a Phil Robertson CD. Practice, practice, practice while you're driving with the windows open to not blow out your ear drums.

Yes sir, that come back call works 90%+ of the time on puddle ducks.
