No bueno on those wood steps, I would have to build a nice ladder, i would also need one of those life lines to attach to while climbing up into that set up.

For deer, I prefer a ground blind. For hogs I would rather be up a tree. I have a hard time being totally still, so tree stand doesn't work for me with deer

I hunt out of my climber 80% of the time. My areas are suitable for climbing and I don't like hunting the same spot more than a few times. I can see better/more and it's easier to remain undetected in a tree.

If humans were meant for trees we'd have prehensile tails....

Probably why I suck at hunting... lol

I have hunted E Tx all my life. I use climbers and lock on. Although pines are good for climbers, I won't use one unless I have no other choice. For one, it can be loud when climbing. Bark cracking and breaking off. Second, if you leave the stand on, you'll come back and as you start up, you grab that part of the stand that sap has dripped on it. Now you got sticky all over your hands and/or clothes!!
A sweet gum will be my go to tree every time. Next will be a oak. Pin oak is fine with a lock on, but not very good for the climber.
Now, with all that said, higher isn't always better. My best buck to date, I was only about 13ft. up. My second best, only 10ft. up, but, I still like to get about 18ft. up.
I don't hunt out west, so have no experience in those conditions.

I used to hunt out of 15 foot ladder stands. Liked being up in the air and could see really well.

However, I've moved to using a few 10 foot quad pods that were fabricated by a local feed store. Very stable, with nice 3X4 platforms, swivel chairs, shooting rails, etc. I have the shooting rails set just high enough I can shoot my bow over while sitting down with camo burlap hanging on the rails to help conceal me.

Also have a couple ground blinds. I prefer to be more in the air, but the ground blinds are so easy to setup and move around. Good alternative for really cold, windy or rainy days too.

I've almost completely gotten away from ladder stands. Pain to setup, move and you also need a good tree.

Ground for me, as a big guy I dont like climbing a tree and the older I get the more comfortable blind I like. Also when its cold and raining I can be warm and dry

I use both, killed out of both. I prefer a treestand. A pop-up is very handy where there are no trees or on rainy days.

You can set up a good blind in a tree with a wolmanized 2x6 wood platform to sit on only six feet off the ground with the right surrounding tree cover and shadows, and or also sit in a live oak with a natural seat that is not that high, but uphill from your trail/feeder. Being uphill on the ground with the shade at your back is ideal for me, but I also use tripods tied in to trees with foot rests cut in to branches for stability. I fell out of a 20 foot post oak with wooden steps one icy day about 20 years ago-was lucky to walk away with a broken shoulder and messed up finger.

I generally hunt out of a ground blind. Don't really like tree blinds but have hunted out of them.
