    Snake bit axis buck

Yesterday my buddy shot an axis buck that had been bitten by a snake twice. Face swollen and gums messed up. Deer had lost considerable weight but was eating.

How do you know it is a snake bite? They are coming down off the rut and have been fighting hard. Could be injury from tine puncture? Trying to figure out how a snake could bite him twice under his jaw. You never know what you will see in animals.

We put this guy out of his misery as well. Biologist said it was a snakebite that caused it. Did you friend eat the axis?

The puncture wound pictures are from one bite. They have separated as the face stretched. The second bite is almost to his gum line and the wound was oozing.

How do you handle this after? Is it edible, what if it wasn't?

I probably wouldn't eat it if it were me. Good cull axis to take out of the herd anyway.

The whitetail above was not edible. His antler fell off when he fell. We killed him mid November. He had infection all thru him. We tagged him and then burned him on a burn pile. He was skin and bones for the most part.

That's crazy! I can't imagine how he managed to get bit in the face like that. We killed an axis last week that had a baseball sized draining abcess on his belly. It was oozing some serious nasty stinking stuff. When I opened him up the abcess was completely encapsulated and did not effect the meat at all.

We had the same thing happen last year.
