A few buddies and I want to make a trip and take the fishing rig out somewhere for alligator gar be we just don't know where to go. We fish lakes around us like Lake Belton, Stillhouse Hollow reservoir, but we don't have gator gar. Seeing pictures and hearing testimony of the gar on the trinity really excites us but we don't have the info on where to go to target the big ones. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Trinity or not we wanna try to find these bad boys.

Ain't a better lake for 'em than Rayburn if you want to do it in a lake... Trinity river is hard to access from public land unless you go to Anahuac and go upstream from there, but that's not the prime end of the river for big gar... You could always go to Lake Livingston and go upstream from there I guess... BEST thing for you to do if you want a BIG gar is contact Garguy and just go with him. He's the best there is at it and has the gear, boat, access and besides about the greatest guy to just be around you could imagine! Good luck.

Plan a weekend trip. Find you a public boat ramp off the trinity and decide which way to head on the river being your preference and scouting. I prefer up river because if something goes wrong I can always float back down the river, I can't float up it. Find you a nice deep hole or a decent straight stretch of river and pull into it and sit for 10-20 minutes and see if they roll. If you see a few roll then try to find something tie on to and sit her out like you would a buck... If you don't like it head up the river some more.
I'll say this, if you use the 287 bridge be very careful using it for the first time. It can get very slick and it makes a big bend when backing down the ramp, don't make the bend and you might as well kiss your boat, truck, and possibly your life good-bye.
