For those still looking for a lease, Campbell has a few available online up around where we hunt in San Augustine county and Sabine county. I lease 580 acres from them in San Augustine county and this will be my 5th year leasing it and its been great. Just thought I would share.

As someone who has leased from Campbell for quite a few years and have been over to talk to them many times, I will tell you that it does help to live close to the tract you are bidding on. They like to lease to people who live close- gives them some kind of sense of security that maybe it is being watched more often. My advice is this...go look any tracts over you are interested in. Google Earth isn't always up to date and you can see what might have changed, whether there is a new clearcut, pipeline or well site. You can see what kind of shape the roads are in and what kind of access you will have- I have checked some that the only access is across private property. As far as what to bid here is what I have told folks that have asked me the same question. What is it worth to you to lease this- something that is close to where you live might mean more to have than something that is several hours away. Get together with whoever else is going to hunt with you, decide what you would individually be willing to pay for a lease ($500, $750, $1000) total up all those dollars, divide that by the number of acres on the tract, and that is your bid. If you bid and win, great. If you bid that and don't- then it probably went for more than you would have been willing to pay if you would have known what that number was. It always comes down to what are you willing to pay for something in that location.

I leased a small spot from them a couple years ago but didn't go check it out first. When I got there, the only access was through private property. The guy wasn't going to let us access the place at first because previous hunters had not respected his place. We finally talked him into it. Only hunted the place once because we found a better place close to where we were going to stay.
All that said, just recommending you check the place out first. Campbell seemed like a good place to lease from.
