    AC question

Hoping someone on here may be able to help out. over the last few days my inside temp has been about 76, thermostat is set at 70. It will cool off at night but during the day it's been getting higher and higher. The unit on the side of the house is really hot and I can hear the fan trying to kick on for about 20 seconds then it stops.

I hosed down all sides of the radiator cooling fins and down inside to try to cool everything down and then it tried starting again I used the hose to spray the fan and I guess jump started it and the fan kicked back on. I've done this several times over the last few days.

Does this sound like the fan motor going bad or any ideas? I'm thinking something is causing it to overheat? I just went and sprayed it down and jump started the fan with the hose. Hoping this is something I can fix myself.

Sounds like it could be either the condenser fan motor or the run capacitor going out.

      Start capacitor is bad

Capacitor. Having to "jump" start the fan motor is a sign. Easy DIY fix but if it was my unit I would call a professional.

I'd guess capacitor. Mine actually went out Monday doing the same thing. Had it fixed in no time.

Sounds like you might have two problems:

            1. Condensor (outside unit) fan /compressor not starting - could be a capacitor issue

            2. Assuming you get your compressor is starting (eventually) but your inside temp is still not falling to your setpoint - could have q refrigerant level/pressure issue

Disclaimer: I'm not a professional - just an internet jackwagon.

Thanks for the responses guys. Looks like I will start there. Cwaller, did you do this repair yourself? Also, I see your in belton, did you source the part here locally or have to order online? I'm in Killeen.

If it was me I would turn off breaker to condenser, take top off of unit, acess prop and spin it by hand, if drags replace motor and cap ,se if there is side movement on shaft, if so replace motor and cap..if ok check cap with meter mf. To see if it is in range..
Check amps on motor, by now you will know if its a $10 part or a $100 part..

Its most likely the capacitor. The fan is not turning therefore not displacing the heat. At night it is cool enough to work but during the day the fan can not pull air across the condensing coil to cool it. Easy fix if you are a DIY type a person.

I probably could have found it around here. It went out at 3 in the morning on a Friday night, and we were headed out of town the following morning. I just ordered it from home depot since we weren't going to be around for a few days. I'd bet if you called a few places you could get one.

I replaced mine 3 weeks ago, my units a areally 6 years old and they have a dual capacitor and cost me 16 dollar's at an electrical supply and 10 minutes to change. AC company would charge over 100 for that

Thanks for the responses guys. Capacitor came in the mail yesterday. Just replaced it today and so far so good. Kicked right on when I hit the breaker, hopefully that did it.
