    50s and 60s Houston

Thought those that grew up in and around the Houston area during the 50s and 60s might enjoy taking a look at this site. I remember many of these growing up. Thank God for the Medical Center. Both of my younger brothers were born in Hermann Hospital.

    Several pages to look at.

I'm not gonna lie, I thought I was opening a thread that promised weather dropping in the 50's. I was so excited that I started shaking a little bit trying to open the thread. I need another cup of coffee Cool pics though.

I miss the old San Jacinto Inn. I ate more shrimp and oysters there at one sitting....and they kept bringing more out till you had to toss in the towel.

Great memories. Remember all the old malls, hit the slide a few times and still remember when the Houston Astrodome was under construction, well before Astroworld.

Also spent a ton of time at Searama which was located across from the Gulf Coast Fishing Pier....another frequent spot of mine through those years.

I still remember my old hometown of Pearland - POPULATION 7,500 people with two stop lights. Rice fields, ducks and geese wintering in expansive rice fields and whitetail deer roaming the edges, between Friendswood and Pearland.

              All gone to hell now

Gilley's was country and Nesadel went rock.

Every April....starting at the west end of the Galveston seawall. These guys frequented this scene for years and years. Helicopters buzzing overhead, hundreds of lawmen everywhere. I made it down to witness this circus each spring. EL PRESIDENTE would park his chopper right in the middle of the west seawall ramp, as the seawall sloped down to the sand.

PBS just ran a documentary on Houston in the last month showing the history of the city from the early 20th century till now focusing on the history around Post Oak Blvd. Funny to see it used to be a dirt road in the country with a single feed store on it.

Spotted these guys a few times rolling I-45 near NASA. Headed either into work or home. Went to school with a few Astronaut kids in Friendswood during these years. There were more Astronauts in training, than made flight missions.

LICENSE PLATES READ - ASTRO 1, ASTRO 2, ASTRO 3 etc etc etc

The old roads around Brazoria County where I lived, Pearland to Manvel to Alvin, were all oyster shell roads. Dodging pot holes in the road at 60 mph, blowing a ton of white dust out over the cow pastures. Destination, one of the many water filled sand pits for beer drinking, swimming and chasing chicks!

Inner tubes or surfboards, we floated with an ice cold beer (Coors when they finally hit the scene) and or Lone Star.
