    TBH Distance Runners-Cold Weather Advice

Looks like Sunday's San Antonio marathon will be greeted with an overnight low of 35 and a high of 58 and sunny.

I've got a Brooks cool weather base top that I'll have, but with the sun and the temps scheduled to climb I'm wondering if I should layer something else for the start, or since they'll be 30K other peeps surrounding me do I need to worry?

Also, anyone have any advice on gloves? I was thinking about using a pair of thin Thinsulate ones I have.

just carry a flask --that will keep you warm

I used to run some marathons back before I got better sense. I used the wool glove liners from Army surplus store. They work pretty well even if wet. Good luck with the run.

Be careful about overdressing. I've always followed the rule if you're not a little cold for the first few miles you are wearing too much. The last Whiterock I did the temp was in the low 20's at the start. We had a friend's wife station herself around the halfway point so we could shed and hand-off clothes. I also wear a cheap pair of running gloves that I can discard when it warms up.

Not that I have ever ran the distance you are about to tackle, BUT.... when we ran in Fort Worth earlier this year, it was COLD and very windy. There is no way I could have started without my Under Armour Jacket. By the time I finished...I was ready to strip out of that thing!

I'll point Devin over to this one....he ran the half that day...and can tell you how he handled it.

At the Cowtown they had some "disposable" runners gloves that I bought for like $3 worked great and had the same texture as wool type liner gloves like TB mentioned. I threw them off half way through.

As for the top, I would either find something you don't mind disposing of or go with a single top. I'm always hot and don't wear anything but a long sleeve shirt above 40 degrees. I don't remember what the start temp at Cowtown was but I think it was close to the predicted SA temps and I was fine with a regular UnderArmour long sleeve shirt. Hopefully, you'll have someone there so you can wear warm sweats up until the start.

Just make sure your ears are covered, or atlest put cotton balls in them. You would be surprised how bad the cold will make your ear drums hurt. Other than that I would not wear a jacket unless you can strip it off and toss it somewhere later.

My roomate will be running in the same marathon. I will give him a heads up too.

Thanks for all the pointers, I'm leaning towards my Brooks LS and my charity fund singlet on top if I look to ditch the LS top. Since I'm sans hair I've got a wicking knit beanie I'll have on as well.

Everybody is different on how they handle the cold but with those temps I would wear a long sleeve shirt like the Brooks you mentioned and over that a lightweight windbreaker-type vest. This will keep your "core" warm until you heat up from the inside. You probably already know this but don't let the cold weather fool you into not drinking enough early. You know what they say, if you wait till you get thirsty, it's too late...

My cousin ran the Dallas White Rock Marathon with socks on his hands.

Ditched them somewhere along the way.

Oh yeah, he also won it.

Looks like perfect weather for marathoning!

Also, a good thing about cold weather is all the ladies wearing those tight bottoms. I found that to be a nice distraction and good focal point.

Hopefully, none of the guys wear them.

Ditto. The trick is to find one who is slightly faster than you so you have something to take your mind off your screaming lungs and barking quads late in the race...

Now THIS is advice I can put to good use. And I won't get slapped for heavy breathing.
