"A little low" is subjective, it could mean at the heart or it could mean below the deer.

Aim for the heart, right in the crease of the shoulder, this is the lower 1/3 of the body. If the deer reacts you will still get a good upper body hit in the lungs, if it doesn't react you get a center punched heart.

I have never aimed low and have never had a deer 'duck' the arrow.
I shoot 20 yards and use a bow that 'may' send the arrow at 250 fps (Switchback, 28" @ 70#).

I shoot for the heart every time. Straight up the leg in the deadly V. If they don't jump I have arrow that slices the heart right down the middle, if they do jump I get a front of the lungs shot or shoulder shot. I've dropped a few in their tracks from high shots but never shot over the top of one.

I always aim at what I predict to be the exit hole on quartering and steep angles. I hunt from an elevated position at most times. If on the ground, I shoot right for the first leg joint down. That's about center mass of the shoulder.

They won't jump a bullet so make a clean killing shot wherever your favorite spot is. With a bow I would say in my experience aiming a little low in the heart lung area will have never hurt and sometimes I have had them completely duck on shots where I aimed center height wise.

It really depends on where/how you're hunting. If hunting over bait, the deer are going to be on edge most of the time and ready to bolt at the slightest noise. If you're hunting a trail, the deer is comfortable and oblivious. Your arrow will probably pass through and hit the dirt before they make a move. Just my experience.

I aim for lower third or exit. I'm 22' up so it depends on the angle. Shot my buck last year at 10 yards walking away from me. Sent it through the top of his back and exited just below brisket. Deer went 50 yards.

Shot doe broadside at 30 yards and went through shoulder and heart. Deer went 30 yards.

Im hunting trails and neither deer made a flinch till the arrow hit them. Both arrows hit their mark.
