    acorn eaters

These woodies made my morning. I have never witnessed anything like this. There was way over 50 ducks and they went to each pen oak in this pasture. Probally 25 trees. The noise was unbelievable when they got up. As loud as a helicopter. After about 15/20 seconds under each oak they would return to this small pond and squeal and splash. Then they would start single file waddling across the pasture toward another oak. Everything was fine until some would break rank and try to get ahead, this would trigger the helicopter rising noise. Wish they would come to my deer lease and eat some acorns, maybe the deer would come to the feeders then.

What's really cool is when you see one come flying out of a knot hole in a tree! You just don't expect to see ducks in the woods.

Cool pictures, thanks for sharing them with us.

When I was growing up, my cousin lived close to Lake Houston and one
winter it rained a bunch and flooded a pin oak flat close to his house.
We eased in there one day and the woodies were everywhere! Swimming
around, in the trees, splashing around and feasting on those acorns. It was
an awesome sight, we shot quite a few in the 2 weeks they hung around, I
still remember it like it was yesterday.

Wood ducks will also eat pecans. Know some uys that have seen them come into a pecan orchard and pick up the fallen ones

Looks like a good time to take a break from the deer and go flush a couple woodies. IMO they are the best tasting duck out there
